There’s yet another shocking twist in Steven Avery’s murder case, with new evidence alleging that the bone fragments found at the murder scene can’t be proven to be from victim Teresa Halbach.
Unbelievable! The Making a Murderer case of Steven Avery, 53, just took another crazy turn with a member of the group Stop Wrongful Convictions calling out the bone evidence as questionable and claiming that it can’t be conclusively tied to murder victim Teresa Halbach. Read on for the new details that could bolster Steven’s case on appeal.
Lynne Blanchard of Stop Wrongful Convictions says that since the trial’s DNA expert Sherry Culhane only had a partial profile, there was no way she could conclusively prove through DNA testing that bone fragments found in the fire pit actually belonged to Teresa!
“Obviously it appears to be very incriminating, but what is going on with this evidence?” she writes. “Why weren’t protocols followed? No coroner, forensic anthropologist, arson investigator or photographer was called to the scene when the evidence was discovered. They had all of these high paid experts at their disposal and didn’t call on them until after the evidence had been shoveled up and taken to the sheriff’s office,” Lynn wrote in a lengthy blog post about the case. Lynn continued, “The DNA evidence described above is not conclusive. How is it even possible for tissue to survive a fire that disintegrated 60% of the bone mass? The teeth which are commonly used to identify a body because they outlast bone didn’t even survive the fire.” Excellent point, and it totally should have come up in his 2006 trial!
Steven’s case drew worldwide attention when Neflix aired the documentary about his case Making a Murderer back in Dec. 2015. It showed how incredibly flawed the investigation was into Teresa’s murder with the police mishandling of evidence being a particularly disturbing issue. Unfortunately even with the piles of evidence pointing to Steven being innocent, he’s lost nearly all of his appeals and remains in a Wisconsin prison.
HollywoodLifers, do you think Steven will ever gain his freedom?
