Pope Francis has just revealed the exact date when Mother Teresa will be declared a saint by the Vatican.
Nearly two decades after Mother Teresa died at 87 years old, she will be formally recognized as a saint. Pope Francis, 79, will introduce the nun into sainthood following confirmation that two miracles occurred after people prayed to her for help. Mother Teresa was best known for traveling the world and helping the sick throughout her long life.
This is incredible news for those who always believed that Mother Teresa was a saint walking among us. Pope Francis will declare Mother Teresa a saint on Sept. 4, 2016, which is also the eve of her death anniversary, reports CNN. Mother Teresa died on sept. 5, 1997, and the day after she is declared a saint will mark the 19 years since she passed on.
Mother Teresa’s road to sainthood started just two years after her death, when then Pope John Paul II waived the five year requirement and opened the nun’s Cause of Canonization. The same Pope also approved her first miracle, when a 30-year-old woman claimed that praying to Mother Teresa cured her stomach cancer. Even more interesting is that scientists and doctors alike could not find an explanation for how the cancer just disappeared, which is why the miracle was declared.
Years passed before another miracle by Mother Teresa was claimed, but Pope Francis was able to confirm it in Decmeber 2015. That very same month he revealed that Mother Teresa would, in fact, become a saint.
The second miracle involved a Brazilian man with several brain tumors was cured with no explanation after asking family and friends to pray to Mother Teresa. It didn’t take long for Pope Francis to recognize the miracle and then begin the process of making Mother Teresa a saint. Wow!
