It isn’t called the big dance for nothing! Teams from all over the country battle it out in a single-elimination tournament. And just like Cinderella found herself at the big ball uninvited, some small teams will find themselves dancing against big market schools. Here’s our top 5 most miraculous Cinderella Stories in tournament history.
5. Gonzaga 1999
In 1999, all anyone knew about this team was they had a funny sounding name and they were making a serious run at the title. America soon learned that the team was from Spokane, Washington and led by junior shooting guard Richie Frahm they were a threat every team they faced. After knocking out three teams, it took #1 seeded Connecticut to end their Cinderella story.
4. Loyola Marymount 1990

3. Cleveland State 1986
Cleveland State proved that you don’t need to go deep to earn the title of Cinderella. All that is necessary is one or two amazing upsets. In a town that is more known for rock ‘n’ roll than basketball, their little state school took down #3 Indiana on their way to the sweet sixteen. Bravo, Cleveland State, bravo!
2. Mercer 2014
It was only one win, but it was a good one. In 2014, #14 Mercer took down basketball royalty with their victory over #3 Duke. Most of America may still not know where Mercer University is, but that Duke team won’t forget them any time soon!
1. Wichita State 2013
They are called the Shockers and that’s what this team did to the country in 2013 when the ultimate Cinderella team made it to the final four of the NCAA tournament.
