These teams absolutely hate each other, so it’s perfect that two of England’s most successful teams and fierce rivals Liverpool and Manchester United‘s good-looking team were drawn together in the Europa League last 16. Despite both teams going through an in-different season in the Premier League, Liverpool and United bring a wealth of european pedigree to the table. Liverpool has won 11 european trophies, including the Europa League (formerly known as the UEFA Cup) three times. Manchester United’s biggest success on the continent has been in the Champions League, which they’ve won three times. But they’ve yet to win a Europa League title, so this could well be their year!
An incentive for both these teams going into this two-legged match is instant qualification for next year’s Champions League if you win the Europa League. Whoever the victor is will be confident of a final berth should they get to the quarter finals.
This is a game that no fan of either team will want to lose, so United and Liverpool are likely to pick strong teams for this clash as we get closer towards the final. But United’s best forward Wayne Rooney is still absent with a knee injury, as is Phil Jones, Ashley Young and long-term absentee Luke Shaw. Liverpool’s front four will look to put pressure on United’s frail defense, with Daniel Sturridge leading their line in front of brilliant Brazilian Neymar‘s international teammates Roberto Firmino and Philippe Coutinho.
Liverpool’s enigmatic German coach Jurgen has been building up the game in the press conference calling this fixture as the “mother of all games” while declaring, “the whole of Liverpool is excited about the chance, right now it’s the only thing that counts.”
So no pressure then! This is a game that’s always too difficult to call. But United have enjoyed recent success against Liverpool, including a 3-0 and 2-1 win in the Premier League. They may be slight favorites.
