Now that Maria Sharapova dropped the massive bombshell that she’s test positive for taking an enhancement drug, here’s everything you need to know about the Meldonium found in her system.
Maria Sharapova, 28, shocked the world by revealing that she had been taking Meldonium since 2006, even though it was banned by the World Anti-Doping Agency on January 1, 2016.
1.) What Does Meldonium Treat?
Well, it’s definitely not just a random enhancement drug, that’s for sure. Meldonium is used primarily to treat angina, myocardial infarction and chronic heart failure. It can also be used for neurodegenerative disorders and bronchopulmonary diseases.
2.) Meldonium Has Not Been FDA Approved
Although it is used in Europe and Australia, the FDA has not yet approved Meldonium and therefore it is not available in the United States.
3.) Why Was Meldonium Banned By WADA?
Meldonium was added to WADA’s banned list as of January 1, 2016 after the agency revealed information that athletes might be using it for enhancement purposes. Because of the date it was banned, no athletes who tested positive for the drug in previous years will have their titles revoked. For those of you that don’t know what WADA is, it stands for World Anti-Doping Agency. Watch Maria’s emotional drug-test confession here.
4.) What Does Meldonium Do?
Meldonium is used medically to treat ischemia (inadequate blood supply), but can also be used as a metabolic enhancer to increase a person’s endurance with greater blood flow. Maria claims she has been taking the drug since 2006 for a magnesium deficiency, an irregular EKG, and her family’s history of diabetes.
5.) Maria Isn’t The Only Athlete Who Took This Drug
Since Meldonium was not on WADA’s banned list before 2016, there are a handful of other athletes who have tested positive for it in the past. In February 2016, Abebe Aregawi, the 2013 women’s 1500m world champion, was suspended after Meldonium was found in her system. Just days later, Endeshaw Negesse, the 2015 Tokyo Marathon winner, was banned after he tested positive for Meldonium.
