The first artist to take the stage in tonight’s episode is Hannah Houston, a pre-school teacher who has been singing in coffee shops for years. The coaches are all intrigued by her rendition of “Unaware” by Allen Stone, but it isn’t until the very last second that Christina, Blake and Pharrell all push their buttons. So, of course, it’s up to Hannah to decide who she wants as her coach — and after careful deliberation, she goes with Pharrell.
Next up is Brian Nhira, whose family hails from Zimbabwe. Brian has experience singing gospel music, but chooses to sing Pharrell’s song “Happy” for his Blind Audition. It’s obviously always a big risk to sing a coach’s song right in front of them, but it works out for Brian! It winds up being another last-second push for both Blake and Pharrell, and obviously the country singer realizes his chances are pretty slim on this one — until Brian reveals he’s also from Oklahoma, that is. But, in the end, he picks his original choice and Pharrell adds yet another member to his team! Stream music from The Voice coaches completely unlimited and ad-free HERE.
Aijia is the next artist to perform — she’s actually Andy Grammer’s wife, and sick of constantly being in his shadow. She also sings a coach’s song, belting out Christina’s hit “Say Something,” but unfortunately, it’s just not what the judges are looking for, and Aijia doesn’t get a chair to turn.
Performing next is Brittany Kennell, 26, a folk-rock singer from Canada who went to the Berklee College of Music in Boston, then moved to Nashville. It’s no surprise that Blake loves her right off the bat, and at the last second, Pharrell also joins in and pushes his button. But with her country roots, it’s no surprise that Brittany goes to Team Blake!
Season 9 contestant Natalie Yacovazzi returns to The Voice stage next, hoping that she’ll have better luck after having no chairs turn her first go-around. She performs “Mr. Know It All” by Kelly Clarkson, and Adam turns around from one of the very first notes. The other coaches are intrigued, but no one else pushes in time, meaning Adam gets Natalie all for himself — and she’s obviously thrilled!
Malik Heard performs next, and his amazing rendition of Nick Jonas’ “Chains” has the judges (and audience) completely blown away. Pharell and Christina both turn around, and they go at each other more than ever before to get Malik on their team, even making sure to name-drop other stars they’ve worked. But after an intense back-and-forth, Malik winds up picking Christina — yay!
Up next is Peyton Parker, 20, a cheerleader who turned to music when her athletic career was ended by an injury. Peyton is another country gal, and her Fleetwood Mac performance impresses Blake, Pharrell and Christina. Pharrell and Christina beg her not to make the obvious choice and pick Blake as a coach, imitating and mocking him to no end, but it doesn’t work, and the country guy gets another Nashville lady on his team. Blake doesn’t only take country singers on his team, though! He also lands an indie artist, Gina Castanzo, and pop rocker Trey O’Dell during night 3 of the Blind Auditions.
Kristen Marie, 20, is the next performer, and what do you know…she’s an Oklahoma native just like Blake! When it’s Blake and Christina who turn around, Xtina is obviously defeated initially, but she fights hard in making her case to land Kristen on her team….and it works! Yup, Kristen, who sings more indie-jazz than country, defies the Oklahoma connection and goes with girl power all the way.
Next on stage is Evan Taylor Jones, who performs in honor of his mother. Evan is yet another country singer, but unfortunately, he doesn’t quite capture the judges’ attention with his performance of “Homegrown,” and no chairs turn around. Hoping for better luck is Nate Butler, 19, a choir singer, finally giving us a break from all the country music we’ve seen tonight. As Nate himself points out, he looks NOTHING like how he sounds, and at the very last opportunity, Blake, Adam and Pharrell are intrigued enough to push their buttons. The guys duke it out, but Nate eventually chooses Adam as his coach.
Closing out the night is Ryan Quinn, who sounds amazing and gets Christina to turn around right away. Adam, Pharrell and Blake follow suit, making this the first four chair turn and standing ovation of the night — and deservedly so! Of course, Ryan has a tough decision to make, and it’s Adam who gets lucky once again. That’s a big one!
So far, tonight’s team counts stand like this: Blake 4, Christina 2, Adam 3 and Pharrell 2. That makes the totals as follows: Blake 8, Christina 7, Adam 8 and Pharrell 8.
