In the wake of Joey Feek’s tragic death on March 4, her husband Rory has been both strong and courageous despite his tremendous grief. And as he faces the heartbreaking task of laying his wife of nearly 14 years to rest, the singer opened up about what Joey requested he do after she died.
Joey Feek‘s death on March 4, although anticipated, was nonetheless devastating for her fans, family, and friends. In total agony, the husband she left behind, Rory Feek, 50, must now plan Joey’s funeral as well as follow through with what she asked to be done once she passed. But just what were the 40 year-old’s dying wishes? Rory revealed them via social media — including a touching Insta — while at the same time paying tribute to the love of his life.
“[I’m] making plans that I hoped we would never have to make,” Rory captioned an Instagram pic of his and Joey’s farm in Pottsville, Tennessee, on March 6. It’s there that Rory will carry out one of Joey’s last requests, to be buried at the family’s farm house. But that’s not all, Rory detailed on his blog, This Life I Live, back in November 2015 that Joey desired to be buried in a “rough-cut wooden box with a cross on it” made from “wood at the farm.” Talk about a beautiful and symbolic departure.
Traveling to Tennessee from Joey’s hometown of Alexandria, Indiana after she died, Rory took his and Joey’s baby daughter, Indiana, 2, to scope out the perfect spot to bury his love. “Find a good spot in the family cemetery in the field behind our house, where we put your mama’s ashes last year,” Rory revealed Joey told him. “[Leave] room enough beside my headstone for you to join me someday… in God’s time.” Any one else in desperate need of tissues right about now? Clearly Joey had a plan laid out for how she wanted things to go after her passing, and, despite all of the pain he’s in, Rory is doing everything in his power to grant those final wishes.
Rory finally broke his silence following Joey’s death after returning to the couple’s home on March 5 – where the country and gospel duo known as Joey+Rory once performed concerts for fans on their backyard stage. By sharing sweet photos of Indiana, Rory revealed to the world that yes, he was ready to start planning his wife’s burial. His first pic, simply captured “home,” shows a giggly Indiana on her father’s shoulders petting a horse. While the second features Indy with her friends and is captioned, “…reunited. Indy’s happy to see her best friend Scout (and Scouty’s little brother Ash).”

Although this is a devastating time for the Feek family, knowing that Indiana and Rory have each other is reassuring for their fans. “It’s hard for me to imagine being there without Joey, but at the same time … it is where she wants us to be,” Rory wrote in a blog post after Joey’s death. “It’s where she will be … She’s gonna be in the mint growing beside our back deck, the sweet-corn frozen in our freezer and a million other places that her hand and heart has touched around our little farmhouse and community. Joey will still be with us. Everywhere.” So beautiful!
Joey will be laid to rest in a private service at the Feek family cemetery, according to the Owens Memorial Services website. A date, however, has not yet been specified.

Joey had been battling cervical cancer since 2014 but she halted all treatments in Oct. 2015 after her chemotherapy was deemed ineffective. This past November, she entered hospice care in her hometown of Indiana, where she spent her final moments surrounded by family and friends.
