For early risers and night owls alike, cereal is a total no-brainer when those hunger pains strike yet you’re in no mood to pull out the pots and pans. It’s truly one of the easiest and most convenient foods around and it’s been satisfying the stomachs of Americans everywhere since Civil War days, according to National Cereal Day’s website.
So just how did cereal come to be a household staple? It first became popularized during the mid 1860s when, during the Civil War, cereal was eaten to help combat gastrointestinal issues of the battlefield’s meat-based diet. Not too glamorous, right? The cereal of the Civil War was actually FAR from what we have around today — it was made out of bland bran and had to be soaked in water over night in order to make it easier to eat. Yuck!
But have no fear, in 1939 cereal finally began to resemble what we know and love today — aka sugar was added…and loads of it! So what is the most popular, best selling cereal now? Honey Nut Cheerios tops the list, according to Information Resources, Inc., with Frosted Flakes coming in at number two. In honor of this delicious, crunchy, delicacy, let’s raise our spoons and enjoy a bowl — or three — of our own!
