Ever since Zoe Saldana was cast as Nina Simone in a biopic, the public has been outraged at the decision. But now that the trailer has arrived and Zoe’s skin has noticeably made darker, Twitter is exploding with people furious about the actress wearing blackface. Yikes!
Zoe Saldana, 37, is clearly putting a lot of work into her role as Nina Simone in a new biopic called Nina, but it’s landed her in hot water with the black community — because in the first trailer for the film, it’s obvious that her skin color has been severely darkened with makeup. Check out the angry social media reactions to Zoe’s casting and the blackface here!

To make Zoe look more like Nina, a singer who faced many trials and tribulations throughout her career, especially at the beginning, due to the color of her skin, makeup artists applied dark foundation to her face and even gave her a prosthetic nose. Fans of the late singer have lashed out at this move, and really went at it when the trailer was released on March 2.
Many have used social media to voice their opinions about who else would’ve been a better choice for the role, too. Stars like Uzo Aduba, Jennifer Hudson, Viola Davis and Lupita Nyong’o have come up as possibilities, but it’s clearly too late now — the movie has already been filmed and is set for release this April. Nina also stars David Oyelowo, who stars as Nina’s manager, who she has a personal relationship with later in life (Nina’s real-life daughter has denied this romance). Zoe has not commented since this new wave of backlash, but she has defended herself previously. “The reality is what keeps me focused and what kept me from, I guess, getting stressed or being hurt by the comments is that I’m doing it for my sisters,” she said in 2013. “I’m doing it for my brothers. I don’t care who tells me that I am not this and I am not that. I know who I am and I know what Nina Simone means to me. So that is my truth and that set me free.” Check out some of the tweets against Zoe here:

Zoë Saldana should've opted out of that movie the MOMENT she saw her makeup artist open up that dark ass pallette.

So Zoe saldana plays Nina simone with a black makeup on… Such a shame, where is Lupita Nyongo n other truly dark skinned actresses

ZOE SALDAÑA IS NOT BLACK. HER PARENTS ARE BOTH LATINO. therefore the "makeup" & fake nose they're using is technically black face.

Zoe Saldana set herself up for neg criticism. That Nina Simone biopic should've been a darker skinned sis, all that makeup is a mockery!👎

HollywoodLifers, are you shocked that Zoe wears blackface in the movie? Do you think she was a poor casting choice?
