Talk about a fall from grace! Mischa Barton quit the mid 2000’s teen drama ‘The O.C.’ thinking she had a major film career ahead. Ten years later she’s returning to TV, as a contestant on ‘Dancing With The Stars.’ So what has Mischa been up to in the decade since she quit the Fox hit?
Mishca Barton, 30, thought she was such a big deal in 2006 that starring on Fox’s The O.C. was holding her back from much bigger projects in movies. Boy was she wrong about that, because after rocketing to fame on the show playing spoiled rich girl Marissa Cooper and being named 2003’s “It Girl,” by Entertainment Weekly, her career instead faded into obscurity. Let’s take a look at what Mischa’s been up to since she left the role that made her a star.
Some people just don’t realize when they have it so good, and that’s totally the case of Mischa when she wanted out of The O.C. After letting her success in the role get to her head, the show agreed to let her go and killed off her character in 2006. She went on to land roles in several films, appearing in The Oh in Ohio, Virgin Territory with Hayden Christensen and director Richard Attenborough‘s war drama Closing the Ring. None of them were box office successes.
In 2009 she returned to TV, cast as one of the main characters in the Ashton Kutcher produced modeling drama The Beautiful Life on The CW. The series completely tanked with viewers and was cancelled after only two episodes. In 2010, she played a prostitute in an episode of Law & Order: SVU.
The actress relocated to London, England, where she was born, and started a new career as a fashion designer. Mischa designed a line of headbands for Stacy Lapidus. She also created a handbag line for London-based Ri2k, which is sold in Britain and Australia. In March 2012 she debuted a new internet project, selling clothing, accessories and cosmetics on a site called Mischa’s Place.
While her design endeavors had marginal success, she was still never able to regain the high-profile she had during her years on The O.C. But she’s still plugging along as a working actress, starring in six films in 2015 alone. Unfortunately, most were small budget and straight to video or streaming services.
Her personal life had plenty of drama as well, with a 2007 DUI arrest and a pending foreclosure in 2014 on her eight bedroom Beverly Hills home, which she had been trying to unload since 2010.
Which has led us to 2016, where Mischa has agreed to be a contestant on ABC’s Dancing With The Stars season 22, competing against Fuller House star Jodie Sweetin, 34 and GMA meteorologist Ginger Zee, 35. Oh Mischa, how the once mighty have fallen!
