We’re just five weeks away from finding out who wins the final season of ‘American Idol’, but tonight, the remaining contestants perform for their safety — read on to see who gets to stay!
American Idol is getting down to the wire! In the March 3 episode, the Top 10 give it their best shot as they perform for judges Jennifer Lopez, Keith Urban and Harry Connick Jr. Superstar Demi Lovato is also in the house to perform with the contestants — see who made the Top 8!
Right off the bat, Dalton Rappatoni is saved by viewers’ votes, and he puts on an explosive performance of “Radioactive” by Imagine Dragons. Keith doesn’t think the song is right for him, but JLo loves Dalton’s unique style as much as ever. Harry points out that Dalton has “intensity” and “sincerity”, but thinks that Dalton wasn’t as present as he has been in previous weeks.
Lee Jean is the next Idol hopeful to be safe, and he does an amazing job performing “Use Somebody” by Kings of Leon. His voice is literally silk! “I think there’s more voice in you than even you know right now,” Jen advises him. “If I was you, I’d practice outside my comfort zone when nobody’s listening.” Great advice!
Next up is an incredible performance of “Confident” by Demi Lovato, and she’s joined onstage by Avalon Young, Gianna Isabella, La’Porsha Renae and more contestants from the Top 10! It’s just so epic, and what better backup singers to have than the final season’s contestants? Demi then transitions into her new hit, “Stone Cold”, injecting emotion into every perfectly-sung note. The next person to be saved is Sonika Vaid. She goes with Kelly Clarkson‘s classic “Since U Been Gone”, and it’s never easy to top the original Idol winner, and Sonika has a rough start, but she really brings it by the first chorus. The judges think her performance was a little too controlled, and JLo suggests that she stop thinking about the notes so hard. It’s great overall, though!
OMG, how good is Mackenzie Bourg puting his own indie rock twist on Whitney Houston‘s “I Wanna Dance With Somebody”? It almost sounds like a Taylor Swift song and I am here for it. “That was good, man,” Keith compliments him. Yessss.
Then we get to hear from La’Porsha Renae, who is obviously safe — she possibly has the best voice in the competition. Her hair is as big as her voice, and she does Beyonce justice by covering “Halo”. I get chills just watching her, and between the lights, her glittery gown and her fantastic voice, she really does look like an angel. It’s compliments from the judges all around.
Then Harry takes a turn on the stage with Butch Walker to perform “(I Do) Like We Do”. Harry’s okay, but I wouldn’t try to text to vote for him or anything. Next.
Trent Harmon is also safe! He croons “When A Man Loves A Woman” by Percy Sledge and his voice is next-level good. The judges love him! Tristan McIntosh is the next person to be safe based on the nation’s votes. Tristan plays the piano beautifully as she sings Vince Gill‘s “Go Rest High On That Mountain”.
Then it’s time for the bottom three to put on the performances of their lives. Avalong Young sounds flawless as she covers The Weeknd‘s “Earned It”! Let’s see if it “earns” her a spot to move forward. Next, Olivia Rox goes a little out of her comfort zone and sings “Trouble” by P!nk. With her pink hair, pink eyeshadow and pink leather jacket, she really does a great tribute to the singer — and of course she sounds awesome! Finally, Gianna Isabella takes on Alicia Keys‘ “If I Ain’t Got You” and it really allows her to display her strong voice.
Sadly, out of the three, only one gets to stay…and it’s Avalon! Sorry, Olivia and Gianna! You did a great job.
