Kicking off this episode is Joe Vivona, 28, whose family owns an amusement park in New Jersey. He sings “Dreaming With a Broken Heart,” and Adam is almost immediately in awe of his soft and smooth voice. Blake follows suit by also pushing his button, and Pharrell joins in at the end, making it a battle of the guys. Each superstar gives their pitch, and it’s up to Joe to make a decision — he ends up going with his 95-year-old grandfather’s favorite judge, Pharrell. So sweet!
Shalyah Fearing is the next to give it a go, and she’s only 15 years old! Her backstory goes like this: She has a huge family and her mom lost her job last year, so they’re crammed into a preeeettyy small house. Needless to say, it could literally change her life if a coach turns around and she’s able to go far in the competition. Shalyah sings a beautiful rendition of “What Is Love” that impresses Christina right away, and since none of the other coaches turn around, it’s an automatic pairing. Girl power all the way!
Up next is Adam Wakefield, who was previously in a band with his brother. Sadly, his brother died from a drug overdose, but Adam persevered and moved to Nashville to continue pursuing music…which is where The Voice comes in! He sings “Tennessee Whiskey,” and Adam pushes his button on the very first note. But he’s not hopeful for long, because Blake eventually pushes, too, and with the contestant being a country singer, Adam knows it’s going to be tough. They argue over this very point — whether the 33-year-old should pick Blake just because he sings country, too — but, of course, he still chooses the “Sangria” singer. No surprise here!
A familiar face is back next — Caroline Burns, 15, auditioned in Season 9, but unfortunately didn’t do enough to win the judges over. She listened to their advice, though, and is back for another chance. It’s a good thing, too, because this time, Adam and Blake are all about it! So, once again it’s a battle between the besties, but it’s the Maroon 5 frontman who gets the glory this time around. Amazing!
Scotland native Natalie Clark, 34, is up next, and I’m immediately obsessed with her just from the Scottish accent alone. She’s in good music company since she’s worked with Richard Branson in the past, and he even sends her a video message of good luck before her audition! Her performance of “All Right Now” is beautiful, but it’s not quite what the coaches are looking for, and unfortunately, no one chooses her for their team.
Next to take the stage is Emily Keener, 16, who hails from a “middle-of-nowhere” Ohio town, has been singing as long as she can remember and songwriting since she was just 12 years old. She sings “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road,” and impresses ALL the coaches before she even belts out one of those big notes. The performance earns her a standing ovation from Blake, Christina, Adam and Pharrell, who then really go at each other to get Emily on their team. The decision is in the 16-year-old’s hands, though, and she ends up going with Pharrell, much to the dismay of the rest of the coaches.
Up next is expert guitar player and rocker Laith Al-Saadi, and he totally gets the crowd going with his upbeat performance and growling voice. Once again, it’s Blake and Adam who turn their chairs, and Adam gets it again. Sorry, Blake!
Performing next is Angie Keilhauer, whose parents came to the U.S. from El Salvador. The viewers’ eyes are on Blake for this one because Angie is a country singer, but while she says she loves the 39-year-old, she also has a soft spot for Christina. Angie sings “I Hold On,” and toward the end, Adam, Pharrell and Blake all push their buttons at the same time. Adam and Pharrell do their best to grovel, but to no one’s surprise, Angie goes with Blake.
In a quick montage of clips up next, Adam, Pharrell and Christina each pick up another singer: Katherine Ho, Jonathan Bach and Lacy Mandigo, respectively. Then, we get to see Theron Healy, 21, a piano bar player, take the stage. He decides to take a risk and sing “Amazed” by Lonestar even though he’s not generally a country singer. It doesn’t work out the way he planned, though, and sadly, no coaches push.
Closing out the night is country powerhouse, Kata Hay, who wows the crowd with an amazing rendition of “Redneck Woman.” But it takes Adam, Christina and Pharrell until the last minute to turn around, and Blake misses out on a pretty amazing country music star by not pushing his button. They all want Kata BAD, and Christina even kisses her on the lips to prove it! Must’ve been a pretty good smooch, too, because she chooses her!
Here’s the team count for tonight so far: Pharrell 3, Adam 3, Blake 2 and Christina 3. So, overall, Pharrell has 6, Adam has 5, Blake has 4 and Christina has 5. Check back next week to see what happens next!
