Sam Smith and Jimmy Napes were surprise winners for their song ‘Writing’s On The Wall.’ Their win was unexpected in a category stacked with talent like the amazing Lady Gaga!
Sam Smith, 23, was clearly shaken as he and writing partner, Jimmy Napes, took the stage to receive their Academy Award for Best Song — ‘Writing’s On The Wall.’ Lady Gaga, 29, and The Weeknd, 26, were among the nominees whose songs were favored to take home the award.
“I actually can’t breathe right now,” Sam said as he grasped his newly won Oscar. His winning song was featured in the latest James Bond film, Spectre. Sam went on to pay respect to the other nominees saying, “Gaga, you are incredible.”
Sam’s song was an unexpected win going up against fan favorites, “Earned It,” by The Weeknd in the film Fifty Shades of Grey, and Gaga’s ”Til It Happens To You,” from The Hunting Ground.

Sam then went on take a moment to give homage to gay rights. “I hope we can all stand here as equals one night,” he noted as he discussed his quest for equality for all. Sam discussed a conversation he shared with Sir Ian McKellen, 76, where they shared ideas about a brighter tomorrow.
