Looks like an Oscar wasn’t the only thing Leonardo DiCaprio was taking home after the Academy Awards on Feb. 28! After receiving his ‘Best Actor’ award, Leo made his way backstage where Kelly Ripa actually met him with a pretty adorable gag gift: that’s right, a stuffed animal bear!
Well, this was certainly unexpected! While most of Hollywood’s biggest stars were spotted celebrating with bottles of champagne following the 88th annual Academy Awards on Feb. 28, Leonardo DiCaprio, 41, was busy celebrating his big win with an old friend. No, not Kate Winslet — we’re talking about the bear from The Revenant! That’s right — after receiving his long-awaited Oscar, Leo made his way backstage where Kelly Ripa, 45, actually poked fun at his buzzed-about role by giving him a stuffed animal bear inspired by the one from the film…and you know, all of the memes that have hit the Internet since.
Seriously, could Leo get any cuter? After scooping up his first Oscar win for his role in The Revenant on Feb. 28, the handsome actor made his way backstage where he was surprised with a very special gag gift courtesy of Kelly. Though champagne probably would have been preferable, the Live With Kelly & Michael host decided to commemorate his epic win by giving him an adorable stuffed animal bear — you know, just like the one that nearly killed his character in the movie — as part of the show’s live Oscars TV special that aired on Feb. 29. While the bear might have come off as a cruel joke to some, Leo proved to be a good sport about it as he joked, “Well, he wasn’t very nice to me,” before accepting it with a laugh.
Of course, we’re guessing Leo is pretty used to the bear jokes by now, considering how many memes have made their way across the Internet since the film’s release. Even the Oscars couldn’t resist poking fun at the furry star during the ceremony earlier in the night when they had the camera cut from Leo to show a stuffed bear clapping enthusiastically in the audience following the announcement of the Best Picture nominees.
Of course, the bear wasn’t the only one Leo was spotted celebrating with following his big night at the Oscars. After Leo made one amazing speech that left Kate Winslet, 40, in tears, he reunited with his former Titanic co-star backstage for a touching moment that left fans swooning. Kate couldn’t help but show her love for her friend by giving him a big hug, and Leo looked so happy Kate was around to experience this monumental win with him. Seriously, out hearts will forever go on for these two!
And if you thought all of that was cute, just wait until you see the video of him getting his Oscar engraved with his name at the Governors Ball! Just like he did at the show, Leo kept calm, cool and collected while waiting for his win to be made official with the engraving. Still, even he couldn’t resist poking fun at his previous bad luck at the show while talking to the engraver. “Do you do this every year?” he asked before adding, “I wouldn’t know.” LOL! Oh, Leo, you’ll forever be a winner in our eyes!
