The 2016 Academy Awards were honored with an incredible performance by the one and only Lady Gaga, who sang the hell out of her nominated song ‘Til It Happens To You.’ The gorgeous ballad was a moving performance that won’t be forgotten anytime soon.
We were moved to tears by Lady Gaga‘s performance at the 2016 Oscars, held on February 28, as she poured her heart out to sing “Til It Happens To You.” Introduced by Vice President Joe Biden, Gaga simply sat behind a piano and sang her heart out — no theatrics. Gaga was nominated for Best Original Song for the ballad, which appears in the film The Hunting Ground. After that performance, it was extremely apparent why!
Good god, Lady Gaga is talented (and beautiful). Mother Monster was subdued and heartbreaking at the Oscars with a gorgeous performance of “Til It Happens To You,” her ballad written with Diane Warren for the gorgeous documentary The Hunting Ground; they were nominated for Best Original Song. Dressed in all white, seated behind a white baby grand, Gaga belted to the heavens while she sang her gorgeous song about the pain and heartache of sexual abuse.
A crowd of women and men who are all survivors of sexual abuse came out of the shadows at the back of the stage, standing defiantly, surrounding Gaga as she ends the song. Gaga’s eyes are filled with tears as she finishes, rising from her piano bench to stand with the crowd, a fist raised to the sky. The audience, all crying as well, give her a standing ovation! It was by far the most moving moment of the entire night.
Gaga has a personal connection to the song, as well as the movie, which she’s spoken about extensively, and publicly. She revealed the painful news that she had been sexually assaulted as a teenager, and working on the film, which tackled that topic, was a cathartic experience. She wanted others to know that they weren’t alone in their experiences; even one of the biggest stars in the world had gone through it.
VP Biden presented Gaga’s beautiful performance with a powerful message about the toll and destruction of sexual abuse in American Society. He urged the audience (and viewers at home) to realize that sexual abuse was never the victim’s fault, and to do everything possible to always get enthusiastic consent from sexual partners!
