And the award for Best #OscarsSoWhite moment goes to…Kevin Hart! During the Feb. 28 ceremony, Kevin applauded his fellow actors of color, telling them that the Academy Awards diversity problem shouldn’t make them forget their ‘hard work’ and to remember they’re ‘breaking ground.’
Kevin Hart, 36, knew he couldn’t stand on the stage of the 88th Academy Awards without bringing up #OscarsSoWhite and the lack of nominations for any actors of color. But while host Chris Rock, 51, tore into the controversy, Kevin took the discussion in a surprising direction.
“Positive overall beats negative,” Kevin said before introducing The Weeknd at the Feb. 28 awards show at the Dolby Theater in Hollywood. “I want to take a moment to applaud all my actors and actresses of color that didn’t get nominated tonight.”
“I want them to understand that tonight should not determine [the worth of] the hard work and effort that you put into your craft,” Kevin added. “At the end of the day, we love what we do and we’re breaking major ground doing it. These problems of today will become the problems of the old. Let’s not let this negative issue of diversity beat us.” Wow, Kevin. That was very deep and powerful. Bravo!
The Oscars were full of moments — some funny, some awkward — that trashed the #OscarsSoWhite issue. When no person of color received an acting nomination for the 88th Academy Awards, the outrage was undeniable — especially since it happened the year before! People accused the show of being racist, prompting Cheryl Boone Isaacs, president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences, to admit that “Yes, we have a [diversity] problem.”

Plenty of celebrities promised to boycott the ceremony over this fiasco. Mark Ruffalo, 48, was ready to skip the Oscars, even though his film Spotlight is up for best picture. Jada Pinkett Smith, 44, and husband Will Smith, 47, have both slammed the Oscars and they decided that they would sit this year’s ceremony out. Chris had something to say about that, calling out Jada for being a hypocrite!
Even before the Academy Awards began, people were taking shots at the pasty complexion of this year’s Oscars ceremony. Ellen DeGeneres, 58, mockingly called the all-white nomination list “the best way to end Black History Month.” Even Saturday Night Live took a shot at #OscarsSoWhite. With all these comedians mocking this horrible situation, the pressure was on Chris Rock, 51, to drop the mic on this scandal, which had the Top Five comedian “nervous as hell.”
