Kelly Clarkson’s incredibly heartfelt and emotional performance of her song ‘Piece by Piece’ on ‘American Idol’ on Feb. 25 left everyone in tears including herself! But why is the song so meaningful to her? HollywoodLife.com has all the details, here.
Kelly Clarkson, 33, went back on the American Idol stage on Feb. 25 to perform her song “Piece by Piece,” and there was not one dry eye in the house by the end of it! It turns out the song means so much to her because it’s about her relationship with her estranged father. Here’s what we know!
When Kelly was six years old, her father, Stephen Michael Clarkson, and mother Jeanne Ann Taylor divorced, which changed up living situations within the family. The singer was sent to live with her mom, her brother Jason Clarkson to live with their dad, and her sister Alyssa Clarkson went on to live with their aunt. Since then, there’s been a non-existent relationship with her dad.
Kelly shared the details about how her song “Piece by Piece” came to fruition to Glamour magazine. “I had [my daughter] River,” she said. “Even from holding her the first day, I was like, how could anyone walk away from that? Then I started thinking that my husband [Brandon Blackstock, 39] is such a great father. He’s not an audience guy — he is onstage doing the work with me. He changes diapers, he stays up, and if I’ve had a late night, he’ll wake up with her in the morning. We’re definite partners, and I felt so lucky.” It truly does sound like a great partnership!
“I was talking to my sister on the phone about how sometimes girls with daddy issues don’t find men like that!,” she continued. “You find men who are all you knew, and I just feel so lucky. It’s a positive song, even though I know it sounds sad. I don’t know what my father went through as a child, and I don’t know why he left and made the decisions he made, but everyone’s human. I don’t understand it for me, but I understand the depth of what that is—having a child—now, and he’s made me want to be that much more present in my family.”
Nonetheless, Kelly’s performance of the heartfelt song left a big impact on everyone watching American Idol and it even had Twitter blowing up about it. She also left judge Keith Urban, 48, in tears! Fifteen years later, Kelly is still touching the lives of her fans, and we got to thank American Idol for giving her a chance to start her amazing career.
