For every heartfelt moment at the Academy Awards, there’s a hippie streaker, a flubbed name or another awkward instance that steals the show. From Jennifer Lawrence’s stumbles to Neil Patrick Harris’s package to Angelina Jolie’s brotherly love, take a look at the most shocking Oscar moments of all time.
The Academy Awards is the biggest night in film. It’s also full of incredibly cringe-worthy, uncomfortable and awkward moments. If you think Jennifer Lawrence, 25, falling over herself — literally — was the worst, wait until you see these other jaw-dropping, OMG moments in Oscar history.
JLaw is up for the Best Actress award at the 88th Academy Awards on Feb. 28, so they better get the crash pads ready. Jennifer ate dirt while accepting her Best Actress award in 2013. Will she faceplant again if she takes home the Oscar? If so, it might be as awkward as when Sacha Baron Cohen, 44, dressed up as his character, Admiral General Aladeen, at the 84th Academy Awards. Sasha “accidentally” spilled the “ashes” of the late Korean dictator, Kim Jong-il, all over Ryan Seacrest, 44! Yikes!
Neil Patrick Harris hosted the Academy Awards for the first time in 2015, and while some loved NPH’s jokes during his opening monologue, his biggest moment (pun intended) of the night came when he pulled a Michael Keaton in Birdman by stripping down to his briefs. While everyone was in awe of the size of Neil’s talent, some accused him of padding!
There was no padding that could have saved John Travolta from butchering Idina Menzel’s name during the 2014 Oscars, calling her “Adele Dazeem.” John’s flub was just as bad as when Corey Haim — the star of The Lost Boys, License To Drive, Lucas and more – was left off the In Memoriam tribute at the 83rd Annual Academy Awards in 2010. A year before, Farrah Fawcett was similarly forgotten at the 82nd Oscars. Rude!
Some moments are unforgettable, like when Angelina Jolie, gave her brother, James Haven, 42, the kind of kiss sisters don’t usually give brothers. It was just as awkward when James Franco wore a dress while co-hosting the 2011 Academy Awards with Anne Hathaway, mainly because it was a joke that wasn’t funny. Maybe James should have ditched the dress and gone au natural, just like Robert Opel did in 1974.
The art gallery owner and photographer streaked while David Niven was about to introduce Elizabeth Taylor. “Isn’t it fascinating to think that probably the only laugh that man will ever get in his life is by stripping off and showing his shortcomings?” David asked. Oh snap!
There are plenty more shocking moments, so look in the gallery to see them all. Which one do you think is the biggest shocker, HollywoodLifers?
