And we have a winner! After a lengthy day of voting in the 2016 FIFA Presidential Election at the Hallenstadion in Zurich, Switzerland on Feb. 26, the soccer elite has chosen who should be at the helm of soccer’s governing body. Congratulations Gianni Infantino, now it’s time for the real work to begin!
Gianni Infantino had some tough opposition in winning the FIFA Presidential race. He was up against Prince Ali bin al-Hussein, who is a member of the family that rules Jordan, Sheikh Salman, a member of the family that rules Bahrain, former French diplomat Jerome Champagne and African National Congress activist, Tokyo Sexwale.
Gianni very narrowly beat Sheikh Salman with the support of 115 voters, only 11 more than he actually needed to win, reports the Los Angeles Times.
The vote was decided by the football associations of 207 countries in the world, all associated with FIFA, and they had one vote each to cast. Kuwait and Indonesia were’t allowed to vote as they are currently under suspension because of government interference, which is a big no-no in FIFA rules.
To win the vote outright, a nominee requires two thirds of the vote in the first round. If that doesn’t decide a winner, then there is a second round of voting in which a majority of over 50% is needed to win. However, if a winner still isn’t found, the nominee with the lowest amount of votes is eliminated, and then another vote is held with the remaining candidates. The vote will continue until the majority is met.
