George R.R. Martin has planned another HUGE plot twist in his ‘A Song of Ice and Fire’ saga, only this time, you won’t be able to see it on ‘Game of Thrones!’ The reason? It involves bringing a previously dead GOT character back to life! Say what?!
It’s no secret that HBO’s Game of Thrones has deviated a little from the script set by George R.R. Martin‘s original A Song of Ice and Fire book series, but as it turns out we haven’t seen anything yet! While his next novel, The Winds of Winter, may still be far off in the distance, George has confirmed that the book will include a pivotal plot development that will not appear on the TV show. The reason? The character at the heart of the twist is dead on Game of Thrones but still very much alive in the books!
This may be one of George’s biggest GOT bombshells yet! In an interview with IGN, the author revealed that after years of deliberations, he’s finally decided to go ahead with a major plot twist, admitting that it will impossible for Game of Thrones to replicate as it as it involves a character who’s already been killed off the show. That’s right, George is now officially bringing people back to life!
“I have decided to do it. Will you know it? I don’t know. It is fairly obvious because it is something that involves a couple of characters, one of which is dead on the show, and not dead in the books,” he said. “So the show can’t do it, unfortunately, because they have killed someone I have not killed.”
While that’s no doubt a tantalizing clue, it unfortunately does little to narrow down the field of potential candidates. As George himself admitted,” it doesn’t narrow it down much because at this point, there are like 15 characters who are dead on the show but not in the books. I get all this stuff about being bloody-minded, but [showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss] are bloodier than I am,” he added with a laugh.
Prior to confirming the appearance of the twist in the book, George spoke to Entertainment Weekly, revealing a little bit more about what fans could expect from the plot development. “This is going to drive your readers crazy,” he teased, “but I love it. I’m still weighing whether to go that direction or not. It’s a great twist. It’s easy to do things that are shocking or unexpected, but they have to grow out of characters. They have to grow out of situations. Otherwise, it’s just being shocking for being shocking. But this is something that seems very organic and natural, and I could see how it would happen. And with the various three, four characters involved … it all makes sense. But it’s nothing I’ve ever thought of before. And it’s nothing they can do in the show, because the show has already — on this particular character — made a couple decisions that will preclude it, where in my case I have not made those decisions.”
Of course, divergence between George’s books and the HBO hit series is nothing new. Game of Thrones does plenty of plot twists that are not in the novel and the show will depart into almost entirely new territory in season 6 as the series’s narrative extends beyond the range of the author’s five published novels in the saga. As for The Winds of Winter, George admits that while he is currently focusing on finishing the book, its release is still far off in the distance. “It is what it is, and ideally I wish I could hold up The Winds of Winter right now and tell everyone to go buy it … but it is still not done so all I can do is continue to write it.” Needless to say, we’ll all be waiting with bated breath until then.
