“The Oscars are on Sunday, are you excited about that?” Ellen asked her audience, who cheered in response to the question during her monologue on The Ellen Show on Friday, Feb. 26. She continued, “The Oscars are on Sunday because the best way to end Black History month is to have the whitest Oscars ever.”
Ellen’s joke, although a hard diss at the show, was well received by her audience as they laughed hysterically. We love that she called out the ongoing controversy surrounding the 2016 Oscars, reminding people about the show’s lack of recognizing the diverse talent in film.
Well done, Ellen!
She quickly moved on to mention that everyone was so excited about the Oscars that they’ve already rolled out the massive red carpet that the stars will be walking down on Sunday night, Feb. 28. “Jennifer Lawrence has already tripped on it,” Ellen jokes, later explaining to the slightly confused audience that The Hunger Games actress trips a lot. Whoops!
As part of her hilarious monologue, Ellen also went on to explain each and every Best Picture nominee for those who haven’t seen them. For The Big Short she let everyone know that it’s the film Ryan Gosling is shirtless in, and for Mad Max: Fury Road she told them that Charlize Theron gets a little crazy with her eyeliner, and she even managed to slip in a promo for her upcoming film, Finding Dory, which she expects to be in the Best Picture category at the 2017 show!
