Born in Queens, New York, Maryanne studied political science and government at Mount Holyoke and was the first person in her family to graduate from college. In 1962, Barry earned a master’s degree in public law and government from Columbia University.

Donald’s oldest sister is a senior judge on the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit. That position began in 1999, when she was appointed a judge by President Bill Clinton.

Maryanne was nominated by President Ronald Reagan on September 14, 1983, to a seat on the United States District Court for the District of New Jersey after the seat was vacated.
