This is horrible! The ‘world’s first supermodel’ Cheryl Tiegs has been on the cover of Sports Illustrated several times, but she’s got no love for one of this year’s covergirls, Ashley Graham. As a matter of fact, she’s calling the plus-sized beauty ‘unhealthy!’ Here’s the scoop.
Sports Illustrated may see their cover featuring gorgeous plus-sized model Ashley Graham, 28, as “a nod to female empowerment”, but ex-supermodel Cheryl Tiegs, 68, insists the mag is promoting an “unhealthy” lifestyle. See all of her appalling comments, here.
Cheryl has been on the modelling scene since the 1970’s, and many call her the “world’s first supermodel”. So, you might think she would be a fan of women breaking barriers and doing something new – like Ashley being the first plus-sized model to cover Sports Illustrated’s swimsuit issue. Unfortunately, that’s not the case.
“I don’t like that we’re talking about full-figured women because it’s glamorizing them because your waist should be smaller than 35 [inches]. That’s what Dr. Oz said, and I’m sticking to it,” the retired supermodel told E! at the 13th Annual Global Green USA Pre-Oscar Party. “No, I don’t think it’s healthy. Her face is beautiful. Beautiful. But I don’t think it’s healthy in the long run.”
However, health is exactly what Ashley promotes. “I’m never looking to be thinner, only firmer and stronger,” said the model to Elle U.K.. “I love my curves and only want to enhance them. I don’t promote anorexia or obesity. I promote health. And healthy at whatever size your body needs to be.” You go girl!
Cheryl’s comments are totally appalling. Ashley has worked so hard to help advocate for acceptance of all shapes and sizes of women, and has empowered so many people to feel good about themselves. It’s disgusting to have someone in the industry who should understand how hard it is to do something different put her down. Don’t worry, Ashley, you have nothing but support from us!
