It’s no secret that Leonardo DiCaprio is one of the Oscar’s most snubbed actors in Hollywood history. But in all honesty, we don’t need the Academy’s approval to know that Leo is also one of Hollywood’s brightest stars to date. Check out his most epic roles below — the ones that SHOULD have earned him the gold!
Leonardo DiCaprio, 41, has never failed to bring his A-game to every single one of his many Blockbuster hits. From portraying a plantation owner to an instant millionaire, Leo absolutely KILLS it every time. So why the shade, Academy? Leo’s Oscar-winning moment has been a longtime coming and we’re totally rooting for him to take home the statue on Feb. 28 for his role in The Revenant. But until then, join us in remembering Leo’s seven most oscar-worthy roles!
We know we’re not the only ones who are just a tad bitter about our boy Leo never winning an Oscar. At this point, it’s kind of ridiculous, right? After all, he has been nominated five times now, his first nomination occurring when he was only 19 years old at that! The young actor was nominated for Best Actor in a Supporting Role for his portrayal of Arnie Grape in 1993’s What’s Eating Gilbert Grape. Considering he played a boy with a developmental disability — and brought tears to our eyes in the process — people thought he had a good chance of actually winning the gold! After he didn’t however, fans remained calm — he was still young after all.
So when 1997’s Titanic blew up, and became one of the most loved romantic flicks of all time, people assumed Leo was a shoe-in for an Oscar nod. Unfortunately for him though, while his costar Kate Winslet was nominated, Leo was left out of the running entirely. Come on, his epic “never let go” speech was Oscar-worthy alone!
Fans became outraged once again when Leo was ignored for his insanely on-point role as Calvin Candie in the critically acclaimed flick, Django Unchained (2012). Although the film itself was nominated, Leo was not. Beginning to see a pattern here? It was actually quite a shock considering he played the ultimate villain, which is not a role we’re used to seeing the hunk take on. What more could the Academy be looking for?
However, the conspiracy REALLY became real when, in 2014, Leo became painfully close to accomplishing his Oscar dreams only for them to be snatched away in an instant. Nominated for Best Actor for his lead role in Wolf of Wall Street, people thought that this would for sure be his year — only to be disappointed once again. This is when fans started to say, “Is this a joke?” Leo certainly exceeded limits with his brilliant take on the arrogant yet incredibly charismatic Jordan Belfort character. Now THIS year has to be Leo’s year, right? …Right?!
Have no fear, we know Leo’s time is coming! After such a solid body of work, there’s no doubt that Leo will have his time to shine. Of course we’re hoping the big moment comes sooner rather than later though, and we know we’re not alone. Kate just so happens to be Leo’s biggest fan so she’s 100 percent in his corner. Here’s to a lucky Oscar night for Leo come Feb. 28! He’s just GOT to bring home the Oscar for his role in The Revenant.
Tell us, HollywoodLifers: do you think Leo deserves to finally win an Oscar this year?
