David Bowie would be smiling after such a touching tribute at the 2016 Brit Awards. After two of David’s close friends — Annie Lennox and Gary Oldman — remembered David’s ‘transcendent talent,’ Lorde came on stage to honor David through song!
There’s a huge hole in England’s heart and it’s in the shape of David Bowie. The late music legend’s native country honored him at the 2016 Brit Awards. Annie Lennox, 61, and Gary Oldman, 57, honored their late friend, before Lorde, 19, tore the house down with one of David’s songs!
Lorde proved that there was “Life on Mars,” after she sang David’s song of the same name at the Feb. 24 event. Her powerful tribute to David came after Annie presented the late rocker with the Brit Icon award. Annie said she was “stunned and shaken” by David’s death, saying he was an “innovative” influence on music across the decades. “He was truly unique.”
Gary went further, saying that David’s shocking death meant that “the world lost a man, an artist, of transcendent talent.” The legendary British actor also said that “David’s contribution, his influence on popular music, on popular culture itself, was no equal.” After seeing Lorde’s tribute to David, no one can deny that!
David was a three-time career Brit Award winner, according to Billboard, after he won the Outstanding Contribution to British Music in 1996 and Best British Male solo artist twice. He also gave two unforgettable performances at the awards shows – first with the Pet Shop Boys in 1996 and alongside Placebo in 1999.
“David Bowie was one of the most important and influential songwriters and performers ever,” Max Lousada, chairman of the Brit Awards, said in a statement after David’s death. “Naturally, we wish to honor his extraordinary life and work at the forthcoming Brit Awards and pay a fitting tribute to one of our greatest icons.”
Plenty of musicians have honored David after he died from cancer on Jan. 10. Kanye West, 38, Harry Styles, 22, and more remembered him on Twitter. Lady Gaga, 29, celebrated David’s legacy during a holographic spectacular at the 2016 Grammy Awards. The tribute didn’t impress David’s son, Duncan Jones, 44, who threw some subtle shade at Gaga on Twitter. Gaga shrugged off the criticism, though we’ll have to find out what Duncan thinks about the Brit Awards tribute.
What do you think about the David Bowie tribute at the Brit Awards, HollywoodLifers? Do you think it did him justice?
