Watch out, Ted Cruz! DKNY designers Dao-Yi Chow and Maxwell Osbourne have a major message to you and all NYC haters in their Fall 2016 collection — Don’t Knock New York! The message was emblazoned on sweatshirts and got loads of cheers!
If there is one key thing that the DKNY collection has always stood for — under its birth mother Donna Karan and now with new parents Dao-Yi Chow and Maxwell Osbourne — it’s the celebration of New York City’s spirit. It’s gritty, urban style, the packed city streets, the fast pace, the diversity, the 24/7 energy, the blaring noise, the ambition, the creativity, and the striving that all adds up to NYC’s unique and unabashed personality. And it’s that urban personality that gets full expression and celebration in Dao-Yi and Maxwell’s new collection.

These are not clothes for shrinking violets. And that’s why NYC bashers like Ted Cruz had better beware. The women like Lorde and Rooney Mara who will look fabulous in DKNY’s new NYC-street-ready collection are not pushovers. In fact, they would have no problem nudging “city” haters out of their very determined ways in this new collection. The clothes are a play on the mannish “work” suits that women took as their new uniform in the ’70s and ’80s.
The designers take black and white power striped suit fabric and cut it into boyish, oversized jackets and shorts. They crop tux jackets to below the breasts and allow the abs to peek out above full white wool trousers that end in a black cuff. Another tux jacket becomes the top of a satin jumpsuit and trousers. The simple white collared manshirt blows up into a full-sized dress fronted in lace, or is interpreted as a long red satin dress that skims the body.
It’s a collection that any modern young woman with the heart of a rebel will love. She’ll get endless kicks out of how the traditional has been deconstructed and reconstructed with street cred style. And then there are the three new signature logo sweatshirts which every proud NYC woman will want to snatch up. They all play on the DKNY initials and you can take your pick: “Dazed Kids New York”, “Designers Know Nothing Yet” and the very best, no doubt inspired by the GOP presidential contender, Ted Cruz — “Don’t Knock New York”!
The phrase expresses the NYC bravado that infuses the whole spirit of this collection. Take a look at the pics and let me know if you love it.
