Fans of the US men’s national soccer team were eager to find out who they would be facing in the Copa America tournament this summer, and the wait is finally over. The 2016 Copa America Centenario Draw established the first round pools for the famed soccer tournament, which finds the US in tricky Group A with Colombia, Paraguay, and Costa Rica. But that doesn’t mean there’s not hope for Tim Howard and his team!
Opening the tournament on June 3, the US men’s team will battle against Colombia in Santa Clara, California, then play Costa Rica in Chicago four days later on June 7. Their final Group A match against Paraguay will take place on June 11 in Philadelphia. If they can manage to win two of the three games, they’ll advance to the quarterfinals to play a team from Group B — Peru, Brazil (who will be armed with superstar Neymar), Haiti, or Ecuador.
As for Group C, Mexico, Uruguay, Jamaica, and Venezuela are facing each other, giving Jamaica a rematch after their defeat by Mexico in the 2015 CONCACAF Gold Cup final. Lastly, Group D puts Chile, Bolivia, Panama, and Lionel Messi‘s Argentina squad up against each other.
For the first time in Copa America’s 100 year history, the tournament will be held outside of South America and move north to the United States. Games will be played in 10 different cities across the US from June 3-26, with the semifinals taking place in Houston and Chicago, and the championship in East Rutherford, New Jersey. Hopefully being on home turf will help carry the US men’s national team to victory!
Copa America may not start until June 3, but now that the Groups are decided, surely all of the teams are already getting into gear for the prestigious tournament. We’re certainly anxious to see what happens come June!
