This is so heartbreaking. Cara McCollum has sadly died days after the horrifying car accident that left her critically injured last week. She was just 24 years old.
Cara McCollum sadly did not get her miracle. The former Miss New Jersey contestant simply could not recover from the horrific head trauma she suffered during a Feb. 15 car crash, and lost her life on Feb. 22. Read the latest update from her loved ones here.
“Thank you all for this tremendous outpouring of love and support for our Cara. We can’t begin to tell you how much your prayers have meant to us in this incredibly difficult time,” a friend wrote on the Prayers for Cara Facebook page Feb. 22. “Cara passed away this morning. Her family was with her in the operating room, and she died peacefully at 4:31am. Before she died, Cara made the selfless decision to donate her organs. At this very moment, she is saving lives. We’ve prayed constantly for a miracle, and we believe God has answered our prayers. Although it’s not the miracle that we first envisioned, it’s a miracle nonetheless. In the end, it’s not the years in your life that count. It’s the life in your years. Please accept our sincerest thanks for your heartfelt prayers. We will all miss her now that she’s gone.”
Cara was driving her Ford Mustang on a wet and snowy road near her home in Margate, NJ on Feb. 15, when the car swerved and hit multiple trees before rolling over and landing into a ditch. Cara was reportedly not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, and was rushed to the hospital with critical head trauma. Although the gorgeous 24-year-old spent a week fighting for her life, she tragically lost the harrowing battle. So sad.
At the time of her death, Cara was working as a news anchor on SNJ Today in New Jersey. As a former Miss New Jersey, Cara competed in the 2014 Miss America pageant, and although she didn’t win, she still went on to be very successful, graduating in the Summer of 2015 from Princeton University. Clearly, this was a life taken way, way too soon.
