Alumni duets continue on ‘American Idol’ as contestants have the honor of singing with past Idols! A superstar needs to be able to collaborate, and it turns out that not everyone’s up to the task. See who got to sing with Jordin Sparks, Chris Daughtry and other champions!
American Idol‘s 15th and and final season just keeps getting better! Tonight, Feb. 18, past Idols and finalists Chris Daughtry, Jordin Sparks, David Cook, Kellie Pickler, Constantine Maroulis, and Haley Reinhart returned to perform alongside the current crop of contestants. Judges Jennifer Lopez, Keith Urban and Harry Connick Jr. were blown away by most, but not all, of the duets — get the performance details right here!
First up, Amelia Eisenhauer joined forces with country superstar Kellie Pickler to perform an awesome rendition of Sara Evans‘ jam “Suds In The Bucket.” The two proved to be a perfect match for each other, with Kellie bringing some extra star power to the stage while Amelia showed off her impressive violin skills. Overall, the duo appeared to earn high marks from the judges, with JLo adding, “Kellie was a really good fit for you and it showed in your performance. She was the perfect match for you.”
Kory Wheeler returned to the stage once again, this time to perform a pitch-perfect cover of Elton John‘s classic hit, “Benny And The Jets,” alongside season 10 alum Haley Reinhart. The two totally nailed it, and it sounded like the judges agreed. “That was really good,” said Keith following the performance. “Haley has such a flow when she’s up there, and this was a really good song for the two of you to do. You two really matched up.”
Next up, Lee Jean teamed up with Chris to perform the season five alum’s chart-topper, “I’m Coming Home.” With his guitar in hand, Lee proved he could hit all the right notes, earning a ton of praise from the judges table. “These duets have been really amazing, and you did a great job,” said JLo. “You know, Chris is one of the best guys to come out of Idol, and you were up their singing with him and you’re still such a baby…I’m speechless!”
CJ Johnson slowed things down for the audience when he took to the stage alongside David Cook to perform “The World I Know” by Collective Soul. While Keith and JLo weren’t totally loving the duo’s song choice, they seemed impressed nonetheless by the ability to harmonize together. “I think you held your own really well,” said Keith. “You hit the harmony and everything. Unfortunately, it’s just not much of a song for you guys to do something with. It’s odd, in it’s melodic movements, but I thought you did as good as anyone could with that song.”
Manny Torres was lucky enough to get paired with season six winner Jordin Sparks, who joined him on stage to perform her crowd pleaser “No Air.” While Jordin obviously owns this song (both literally and figuratively), Manny more than held his own against here. The two also looked super cute holding hands and starring into each other’s eyes, which totally earned them some extra points in our book. “You were great together,” exclaimed Keith after the performance. “When you walked out there, it was a real moment. It was this sort of power house deut moment. You really stepped up to the plate and I thought you were both terrific.” JLo even agreed adding, “It couldn’t have been more perfect. I was the perfect marriage of the two of you.”
Finally, we had Jenn Blosil, who teamed up with Constantine for what they described as a modern rendition of Ella Fitzgerald‘s “My Funny Valentine.” Jenn’s slightly raspy sounding voice was the perfect match for the classic song, while Constantine helped bring a jazzy sort of vibe. “It was kind of the perfect embodiment of people coming together and being so different from everyone else,” said JLo. “I just feel like you were singing to each other and in your own world and I loved that.” You said it Jen!
