On ‘American Idol’, the remaining 12 of the Top 24 get their chance to show us what they’ve got tonight as they perform solo. See who totally kills it!
Hope you’re ready for more epic solo performances — American Idol delivers as always when the last 12 contestants from the Top 24 perform for judges Jennifer Lopez, Keith Urban and Harry Connick Jr. in the Feb. 17 episode. What we wouldn’t give to be in that Vibiana theater in Los Angeles — find out who’s bound to make it to the next round!
Solo performances continue tonight, with the last 12 hopefuls hitting all the right notes — well, most of the time…
First, country powerhouse Shelbie Z kills “Work Hard, Play Harder” by Gretchen Wilson. She has a voice that could fill an arena! However, Keith and Jen think that this song wasn’t the best key for Shelbie. “I thought it was a solid performance,” Harry said. Either way, she has an amazing voice that’s hard to contest! Next is Manny Torres, who does a great job covering Coldplay‘s “Adventure Of A Lifetime”. JLo is head over heels for Manny, and it’s adorable to watch her gush over him. “I love the way you work the camera. I don’t think it’s a good song for your vocals, but it suited your spirit,” is Keith’s critique.
Kory Wheeler was eliminated during Hollywood Week last season, but now he’s back to give it another shot. He plays the piano and does a beautiful rendition of James Bay‘s “Let It Go”, but Harry doesn’t love it. “It wasn’t incredibly moving to me,” he says. Keith and Jen liked it, though, so we’ll see how Kory does!
Amelia Eisenhauer does an awesome, stripped down version of Avicii‘s “Wake Me Up” and really gets the crowd going! “I like that you’re trying things,” Keith says of her unique cover. “You are a special girl for sure, with a special voice,” JLo compliments her. Harry thinks she’s quirky enough to try more offbeat songs — maybe she’ll heed that advice for duets tomorrow. Next, Jen Blosil is a pop-punk dream, with platinum blond hair and a cool sense of style. She does a piano cover of Justin Bieber‘s “Sorry” and totally transforms the song! Jen definitely has the voice of a star. Harry calls her a breath of fresh air before accusing her of being out of tune in the same sentence (to resounding boos), but Keith loves her originality. JLo thinks the risky arrangement paid off and thinks it was “beautiful”!
Then, CJ Johnson does a pitch-perfect cover of Edwin McCain‘s “I’ll Be”. “It was the perfect song, range and key,” Keith says. “Great song, great vocals — I feel like you were singing that to me,” JLo agrees. Harry, again, thinks he was a little out of tune, but when the heck is Harry ever satisfied? CJ is followed by the adorable Lee Jean, who goes with Ed Sheeran‘s “Runaway”. His voice is literally magic. Jen loves his rhythm!
Crowd favorite Trent Harmon chooses Chris Stapleton‘s “What Are You Listening To” for his solo performance, and it’s a good job, but safe. JLo and Harry absolutely love it, though Harry dislikes the song choice. Keith disagrees, though, and thinks the song was amazing! Next is 15-year-old Tristan McIntosh, who takes on Carrie Underwood‘s “Good Girl” and nails every run. “You have so much talent and look like a million bucks,” Keith says. All the applause!
Then it’s Adam Lasher‘s turn, and he’s taking his second shot at the Idol crown. He does a rousing cover of “Black and Gold” by Sam Sparro and the crowd just loves him. The judges think the song choice wasn’t the best, and they’re all disappointed that they couldn’t get into the melody or rhythm.
For the home stretch, Dalton Rapattoni takes the stage for a rocking solo performance of Billy Idol‘s “Rebel Yell”. He brings heart and intensity to the song, and I can totally see him opening for Fall Out Boy some day. “That made me FEEL something,” JLo. “You’re so pretty, I can’t with him,” she adds. Uh, agreed. Harry calls it “phenomenal” and “tremendous”, and Keith loves that Dalton never disappoints. He is SO going to the top 10.
Last but not least is Olivia Rox, who’s been singing since she was 2! She chooses “Confident” by Demi Lovato and dare I say she sounds just as good as Demi does when she sings it, if not better! “I thought it was really, really strong,” Harry says. “Aaaand the show starts now,” Keith declares. “You lucky girl — you’ve been given an amazing gift.” You said it, Keith!
