So that‘s how ‘The One with All the Poker’ came about. During the upcoming James Burrows tribute special, the cast of friends (minus Matthew Perry) reveal behind the scenes secrets — and just how close they really were off screen. Watch two new videos here!
Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow,David Schwimmer and Matt LeBlanc sure act like best friends. The actors reunited for the upcoming special, Must See TV: A Tribute to James Burrows, and well, it seemed like no time at all had passed. The chemistry between these costars is undeniable, and it’s no surprise they were on for so long.
In the first clip, the friends talk about Jimmy Burrows as a director and how much he helped them all — David especially since he went into directing. “I observed Jimmy on other shows he was directing at the time. He graciously took him under his wing,” he said. With that, Lisa went on and explained that when James came to the show, they all knew who he was.”
“I felt like we were sort of the brand new show. There had been Taxi and Cheers; he went around and told us ‘You’re Mary from Mary Tyler Moore.’ You’re Rev. Jim.’ He wasn’t saying, ‘You’re as good as Christopher Lloyd,’ but I heard what I needed to hear from Jim Burrows,” she said laughing. “I remember him saying to me you’re [Tony] Danza,” Matt added.
After that they talked a little bit about their auditions — we knew that Jen actually tried out for the role of Monica, and Courteney had auditioned for Rachel, but we didn’t know that while everyone had to audition, none of them had to audition for Jimmy specifically — except Lisa. Apparenlty she auditioned twice. (So worth it!)

In the second clip, Matt took a minute to call out his on-screen BFF, Matthew Perry, after Andy Cohen said how excited he was to have them all together. “Whoa whoa we’re not all together! There’s one missing, We wish he was here. Matty, we miss you,” he said.
After that, Jen and Lisa actually revealed that they became really close backstage — playing poker.
“He gave us his dressing room because it was big,” Lisa said. “It should have been, that’s fine. But we really wanted to connect. This was sort of unspoken, but we felt like we need to be friends, we need to get along, we need to connect. And so we started playing poker and Jimmy gave us his room.” Then Jen chimed in, “and they wrote an episode about it.”
