This is heartbreaking, but so sweet. Country superstar Rory Feek is nominated along with his terminally ill wife Joey for Best Country Duo/Group Performance at the 2016 Grammys, but Rory revealed that he’ll be skipping the ceremony to stay by his dying wife’s side.
Are you ready for a sad story? Rory and Joey Feek‘s amazing song “If I Needed You” has earned them a Grammy Awards nomination, but Rory shared on Feb. 12 that he won’t be attending the awards tonight. Instead, he’ll gather around Joey’s bed with family to watch the biggest night in music on TV. Read Rory’s bittersweet message here.
Joey is too sick to go to the ceremony, and for Rory, that means he can’t go, either. “We will again gather around Joey’s bed and [watch] the Grammy Awards — Joey’s mama and daddy and her three sisters and their kids — all of us having a big-time together,” Rory wrote.
“We’ll watch the presenters and performances and scan the cutaways to the audience for our daughters and our manager in the sea of people dressed-to-the-nines for the big night. And we will smile at each other and wonder how in the world we got so blessed. How we’ve come so far without going anywhere at all.”
“Joey tried to talk me into going with them… many, many times,” Rory continued. “She even had a Southwest ticket purchased for me that I cancelled. I can’t leave her. I won’t…Instead, I will be sitting beside her and cheering on Little Big Town and Blake Shelton [and] all the talented folks who are nominated in our category and others. It’s an honor for us to just be a part of that night, it truly is.” Well, if that doesn’t bring a tear to your eye, we can’t help you!
