What I wouldn’t have given to be in The Room Where It Happens — AKA the Grammy Awards in the L.A. Staples Center — to see the cast of Broadway’s ‘Hamilton’ perform their explosive opening number tonight. How amazing was that?!
The 2016 Grammy Awards are all about the performances, and on Feb. 15, we were treated to music from Broadway, which is rarely seen at these awards. Lin-Manuel Miranda and the rest of his amazing cast did not throw away their shot (can’t resist, sorry) and they put on the show of their lives. Get all of the performance details here!
I’m a little biased, because I’m obsessed with Hamilton and have seen it live, but I feel comfortable saying this was one of the best performances we saw tonight, especially considering Broadway doesn’t get a lot of play at the Grammys. “Alexander Hamilton” is one of the most important songs in the show, as it sets the stage and introduces our protagonist, and it was refreshing to see a different flavor incorporated into the most important night in music!
Tonight, the Broadway cast — Lin, Leslie Odom Jr., Renée Elise Goldsberry, Phillipa Soo, Christopher Jackson, Jasmine Cephas Jones, Daveed Diggs and Anthony Ramos — put on the performance of their lives as they telecasted from the Richard Rodgers theater in New York City. The choreography was flawless, and every line was sung with heart and soul. These guys do this every night (and sometimes in the day, too), but they give it 150% each time! Since Hamilton is sold out for, well, ever, this was also the chance for the rest of the world to experience what goes on in that magical little theater every day. I hope you were as impressed as I was!
UPDATE: Hamilton won the Grammy for Best Musical Theater Album. YAAAAS.
