When it comes to award shows, the Grammys have a colorful history of producing some of television’s craziest moments, and throughout the years stars have pulled some unbelievable stunts at the prestigious award show. Join us in reliving the ceremony’s most outrageous moments of all time here!
We cannot wait to see what insane behavior unravels at the 2016 Grammy Awards. After all, music’s biggest night never fails to entertain — intentionally or otherwise. From hysterical antics, disastrous performances, and downright insane getup, when tuning into the Grammys you always know you’re in for a treat! And we’ve curated the craziest of the craziest right here — read on to revel in eight astonishing moments from Grammys past.
Let’s jump right to it and discuss the man who is KNOWN for his wild stunts and reckless behavior, Mr. Kanye West, 38. We know it’s not an award show if Kanye doesn’t make a scene and last year, at the 2015 Grammys, was no different. Kanye had us disappointed at first as he remained mostly composed during the actual show, despite one hiccup where he “pretended” like he was going to pull a “Kanye” circa the 2009 VMA awards, by interrupting Beck as he accepted his award for Album Of The Year. But although he walked up to the stage, Yeezus remained silent. Phew! However, as it turned out, Kanye was NOT actually joking!
“Beck needs to respect artistry and he should have given his award to Beyoncé,” Kanye later ranted at the E! After Party. Ouch! “You all know what it meant when ‘Ye walks on the stage.” Yes, Kanye, we do. But before Kanye pulled his first “Kanye,” there was Ol’ Dirty Bastard from Wu Tang Clan. After Wu Tang lost to Puff Daddy for hip-hop album of the year at the 1998 Grammys, Ol’ Dirty Bastard took to the stage to defend his clan. In doing so, he bizarrely interrupted Shawn Colvin’s acceptance speech for Song Of The Year — a category that Wu Tang Clan wasn’t even nominated for! Confused? You’re not alone.
It seems as if acceptance speeches often go awry at the Grammy’s — usually due to passionate artists’ interruptions. But it wasn’t a fellow singer who interrupted Frank Sinatra at the 1994 awards, it was the NETWORK! Why? Frank was completely rambling while accepting his Grammy Legend award and even went off on a tangent about alcohol, saying, “I hope you weren’t drinking all night and didn’t ask me to join you. It’s very dry back[stage].” He also ranted about not being allowed to sing a song. It got so bad that the network pulled the plug and went straight to a commerical right in the middle of it! Whoops!
But while acceptance speeches are unpredictable, nothing is more wild than the actual performances that take place at the Grammys. After all, Elton John and Eminem’s epic duet made history at the 2001 awards. Eminem, who had been deemed a homophobe, took to the stage with the legendary performer and made the statement of a lifetime while bashing the anti-gay rumors in the process. Good for you Em! But flash forward to 2014 when an even bigger political statement was made at the Grammys when Queen Latifah officiated 33 same-sex couples’ weddings live while Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, Mary Lambert and Madonna performed “Same Love.” Talk about a beautiful moment!
Remember what WASN’T a beautiful moment? when Nicki Minaj scared the living daylights out of everyone when she performed an exorcism on stage — complete with levitation, a priest, and lots and lots of fire. It looked as if the artist was having a major nervous breakdown rather than performing on the 2012 Grammy stage. But let’s be honest, when it comes to crazy stunts, Lady Gaga might just be the queen. It’s impossible to forget when the singer was carried down the red carpet in 2011 encased in — wait for it — a giant egg. She definitely gets major points for creativity, but her getup was supposedly symbolizing a “rebirth” for the artist.
While Lady Gaga’s egg will never be forgotten, perhaps the most outrageous DRESS to ever grace the Grammy red carpet, was Jennifer Lopez’s unbelievable Versace print gown with a neckline that plunged well past her belly button. Of course J. Lo stunned but she definitely didn’t leave much to the imagination. From the outfits to the performances, to the after after parties, the Grammys are chock full of surprises and we cannot wait to watch what unfolds this year on Feb. 15!
