Fully deserved! Shaquille O’Neal, 43, and Allen Iverson, 40, have a shot at being inducted into the 2016 Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame after they were chosen as finalists at a press conference as the NBA All-Star Weekend festivities get underway. Well done, guys!
The news means they are one-step closer to being inducted into the prestigious Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, which will be decided by a 24-man honors committee. Should both gents receive the 18 votes needed to qualify, they’ll officially be Hall of Famers!
Shaq has had a stellar career, winning four NBA Championships, one MVP award, and features in the league’s top 10 in scoring. Allen’s record is equally as impressive, he won four scoring titles, and was voted MVP in 2001. Ironically, his most notable performance for the Philadelphia 76ers came in a game against Shaq. The point guard amassed an incredible 48 points in that game that year — giving the Los Angeles Lakers their only loss in the most dominant season in the NBA ever recorded.
The class of 2016 will officially be unveiled on April 4, the same day as the NCAA championship game, in Houston. The enshrinement ceremony will then take place on Sept. 9 in Massachusetts.
And if you were wondering how Shaq and Allen could be inducted into the Hall of Fame so soon, it’s all because players are now eligible to be considered 4-years after retirement. The previously ruling was 5-years, so this gives recent retirees a very good chance.
Other notable nominees included, Michigan State Coach Tom Izzo, Oklahoma State legend Eddie Sutton and the first female player to be signed in the WNBA, Sheryl Swoopes.
HollywoodLifers, do you think Shaq and Allen are worthy finalists in for theNaismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame? Sound off right here!
