Meryl Streep is not backing down from this one! The three-time Academy Award winner is taking a stance against this years Oscars lack of diversity, but did her statements get her in trouble? HollywoodLife.com has all the details here.
Meryl Streep, 66, is now one of many celebrities that are speaking out about the big lack of diversity at this year’s Academy Awards and the movie industry in general. But did she go too far with what she said? Read more below to find out.
While Meryl was head of an all-white jury at Berlinale, also known as the Berlin Film Festival, she commented on equality and inclusion of all genders, races, ethnicities, and religions. “There should be inclusion, and this jury is evidence that at least women are included and in fact dominate this jury, and that’s an unusual situation in bodies of people who make decisions so I think the Berlinale is ahead of the game,” she shared with the reporters.
That wasn’t all that Meryl wanted to say. “I’ve played a lot of different people from a lot of different cultures,” she said. “There is a core of humanity that travels right through every culture, and after all, we’re all from Africa originally.” The biggest statement had to be when she told the panel, “Berliners, we’re all Africans, really.” The actress was apparently referencing John F. Kennedy’s famous “Ich bin ein Berliner” (I am a Berliner) quote,” according to Variety.
Many people on social media went into a frenzy after this statement went viral!
Meryl Streep, go home, you’re drunk/oblivious to what geography and/or white privilege is.

“We’re all Africans, really” is like something Meryl Streep would say on the CURB YOUR ENTHUSIASM version of the Oscars.

Although Meryl is receiving backlash from her comments, no one can deny her the fact that she does play characters in movies that make a difference in the world and the film industry. She was even honored by President Barack Obama with the Presidential Medal of Freedom, which is awarded to individuals who have made “meritorious contributions” to U.S. security, world peace or cultural endeavors. There will clearly be no stopping Meryl as she continues to fight for whats she thinks is right on and off the screen!
