Woof — that was more brutal than we thought it’d be. On the Feb. 11 episode of ‘Grey’s Anatomy,’ Meredith was violently attacked by a patient and left for dead. It was a moment we knew was coming, but had no idea just how awful we’d feel while watching it.
Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) has been through so much over the course of 12 seasons on Grey’s Anatomy, but nothing could have prepared us for her getting brutally attacked on the Feb. 11 midseason premiere. It was both shocking and gut-wrenching.
So, essentially six weeks passed by throughout the entire duration of this episode, but not a lot was said. And that’s because Meredith’s hearing didn’t come back until halfway through the episode. She didn’t just suffer some scrapes and bruises during her attack — she had some pretty long-term extensive damage. On top of losing her hearing, she also had to have her jaw wired shut, casts on her arm and leg, and a feeding tube through her nostril. It was pretty gruesome.
And while Meredith was the one physically affected by the attack, Amelia (Caterina Scorsone) was emotionally affected. That’s because before the attack, Meredith called her for a consult, but due to their ongoing issues, she made other tasks a priority. When she saw Meredith fighting for her life, she knew the attack never would have happened if she had just come when initially called. Then, we discovered that Amelia fell off the wagon after the accident and by the time Meredith was able to talk again — six weeks later — she had 30 days sober. Richard (James Pickens, Jr.) also begged Meredith to forgive Amelia for not being Derek, Derek for dying too soon, and herself for hating Derek for dying too soon. Meredith told Amelia she’s not ready to forgive her, but she did forgive Lou — the patient who attacked her at the start of the episode.
As far as the other characters were concerned, we still don’t know if Jo (Camilla Luddington) said yes to Alex’s (Justin Chambers) proposal, but Meredith gave him her blessing. And Jackson (Jesse Williams) seemed to have served April (Sarah Drew) divorce papers.
