So touching! Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson has penned an open letter to Peyton Manning, thanking the Super Bowl 50 champ for inspiring him to love the game, and even recalling meeting his hero at a youth football camp. Read on for the heartfelt message.
Grab a tissue cause we’re getting misty! Russell Wilson, 27, is heaping on some very public praise to Peyton Manning, 39, after the Denver Broncos quarterback led his team to the Super Bowl 50 victory, in what might possibly have been his final game as an active NFL player. After 18 years in the NFL, many are speculating that Peyton will retire from the sport while completely on top of his game, and the Seattle Seahawks quarterback has written a sentimental open letter to #18 to tell Peyton how much he influenced him to always reach for greatness.
In a letter posted to The Players Tribune on Feb. 8, Russell titled the message “If This Is It,” and it not only praises Peyton’s amazing NFL career but thanks him for personally inspiring him to achieve success. “From all the wins, to the few tough losses. From the 71,000 yards, to all the touchdowns, to the few interceptions. From all the meetings, to all the hard practices, to all the film, to all the blood, sweat and tears,” he starts the message. “From all the Pro Bowls, to the handful of MVPs, to the two Lombardi trophies. From all the teammates, to all the opponents, to all the fans. From the blue and white, to the blue and orange…” Russell continues, referencing Peyton’s 12 years with the Indianapolis Colts and then his last four years with the Denver Broncos before he turns personal.
“Sheriff, if this is it, there’s one moment I won’t forget. 10th grade. Louisiana. At your quarterback camp. You inspired the kid in the green shirt,” he continues and includes a photo of himself, in that green shirt among a sea of other teen football hopefuls, looking intensely in the direction of where Peyton was speaking.
“You inspired me to work hard. To be disciplined. To be respectful. To take notes. You inspired me to love the process. To love the sweat. To love the tears,” he adds. “But most of all…You inspired me to love the game. Thanks, Peyton. If this is it, thanks,” as he ends the letter with his own signature. Oh man, this is SO touching! And it just goes to show how much Peyton is loved and respected by his fellow NFL stars.
