Lena Dunham announced that she can’t promote ‘Girls’ season 5 despite her hard work because of a flare up in her endometriosis. The brutal reproductive condition can produce crippling pain, and Lena’s taking it easy for her health. Poor thing!
Though the press tour for Girls‘ fifth season is underway, creator and star Lena Dunham, 29, won’t be present for any of the stops. Lena has a reproductive disease called endometriosis, which can cause extremely severe pain. The actress announced on her Instagram February 8 that because she’s having a flareup, she’s going to have to pass on the press tour and get some well-deserved rest! “I just wanted to let you know that, while I am so excited for Girls to return on Feb 21, I won’t be out and about doing press for the new season. As many of you know I have endometriosis, a chronic condition that affects approximately 1 in 10 women’s reproductive health. I am currently going through a rough patch with the illness and my body (along with my amazing doctors) let me know, in no uncertain terms, that it’s time to rest,” Lena captioned an Instagram of just her hand, indicating she was laying in bed.
Hey Beloved Pals, I just wanted to let you know that, while I am so excited for Girls to return on Feb 21, I won't be out and about doing press for the new season. As many of you know I have endometriosis, a chronic condition that affects approximately 1 in 10 women's reproductive health. I am currently going through a rough patch with the illness and my body (along with my amazing doctors) let me know, in no uncertain terms, that it's time to rest. That's a hard thing to do, but I'm trying, because all I want is to make season 6 of Girls the best one yet. I'm lucky enough to have support and backup from Jenni, Judd and the whole Girls gang. So many women with this disease literally don't have the option of time off and I won't take it for granted. Wishing you all health & happiness, in whatever form suits you. Back soon xxLena

How horrible! Endometriosis is a serious, chronic illness that can bring about unimaginable pain, and it seems like that’s what Lena is experiencing right now. Endometriosis is a disorder in which the endometrium, the tissue that normally grows inside a person’s uterus, grows outside the organ into the pelvic region: ovaries, bowel and the lining of the pelvis itself.
To make things worse, the tissue continues to act as if it’s inside the uterus, growing and changing throughout the menstrual cycle. That’s a huge problem, especially when the person gets their period; the tissue is trapped inside the pelvis instead of exiting the body! People with endometriosis sometimes develop scar tissue and cysts, and it becomes massively painful at times — just like Lena’s experiencing right now! Poor, poor thing.
Lena first spoke out about battling the disease in November 2015 on her Lenny newsletter, describing the bleeding, cramps, mood swings and fatigue that she regularly experiences. She treats the illness with monthly injections. “I am strong because of what I’ve dealt with…and I am no longer scared of my body. In fact, I listen to it when it speaks,” she wrote.
