What a touching tribute! As John Elway and his Denver Broncos celebrated their victory in Super Bowl 50, the NFL vet made sure to honor the franchise’s owner, Pat Bowlen, with a sweet dedication. Watch it here!
Eighteen years after Pat Bowlen dedicated Super Bowl XXXII to then-quarterback John Elway, the Denver Broncos owner received his own recognition from John. Currently battling Alzheimers disease, Pat, 71, wasn’t able to be part of the Broncos’ Super Bowl celebration after they defeated the Carolina Panthers 24-10 on Feb. 7 — but while Pat wasn’t in attendance, John, 55, wanted to declare that he certainly wasn’t forgotten!
“I’m gonna say this, and he would not want me to say this, but this one’s for Pat,” John said as he proudly hoisted the Lombardi trophy in the air. Considering his dedication was nearly 20 years in the making, it was quite the special moment!
After John led the Broncos to the Super Bowl XXXII victory in 1998 — following three previous attempts — Pat honored his quarterback during his interview on stage, holding up the trophy and proclaiming, “This one’s for John.” Although Pat couldn’t be next to John when he returned the favor, it was clear that John was eager to give Pat the same kudos he was once given!
“I was waiting for the day that I was able to do that,” Elway said. “I was glad, really thrilled, that I would be able to do that.”
Pat took over the Broncos in 1984, during John’s second season with the team. Both have been with the franchise ever since, but Pat was forced to step away from operations due to his illness in 2014. Pat’s wife, Annabel, and his family represented him at Super Bowl 50 — surely it meant a lot to them to have John honor Pat the way he did.
As if John’s dedication wasn’t heartfelt enough, he made sure to note that Pat would be seeing the Lombardi trophy soon enough. After his tribute, John added, “We’ll take that trophy over to Pat next week and let him cherish it.”
