Before big sporting events begin, it’s the job of the National Anthem singer to really capture the audience’s attention, and Lady Gaga did just that and more at Super Bowl 50 on Feb. 7! She joins an epic list of elite singers who have given incredible ‘Star Spangled Banner’ performances — relive the best of the best right here.
Lady Gaga TOTALLY delivered by kicking off Super Bowl 50 with a gorgeous rendition of the “Star Spangled Banner” on Feb. 7, and we’ll always remember it as one of the best celeb National Anthem performances of all time. But who else joins her on this list? Watch seven other incredible and patriotic renditions of the song right here!
There are no words to describe the feels and chills you’ll get when you watch Whitney singing at Super Bowl XXV in 1991. Because this went down at the same time as the Persian Gulf War, there was an extra emotional and meaningful layer to the performance, and Whitney’s voice simply cannot be matched…ever. She made it look completely effortless while hitting note after note — we never wanted it to end!
And you’re telling me this gal didn’t win American Idol?! J.Hud held out notes like you wouldn’t believe when she sang the National Anthem during Super Bowl XLIII in 2009. By that point, it was already five years since Jennifer was shockingly eliminated in 7th place on the show, and she clearly proved her talent with multiple Grammy wins AND an Oscar for her role in Dream Girls, so this performance just solidified how incredible she is.
3. Faith Hill
Faith sang the Anthem at Super Bowl XXXIV back in 2000, and her country-pop twist on the song was something fresh and new. Although she sang a bit more soft-spoken than the ladies above, Faith belted out all the right parts of the song when it mattered, making her big moments memorable and incomparable. Bey might’ve killed it during the 2016 halftime show, but back in 2004, she joined the Super Bowl to sing the “Star Spangled Banner.” The game took place in her hometown of Houston, so she had a lot of support behind her, and it showed when she totally nailed those incredible vocals. As always — QUEEN.
5. The Dixie Chicks
It’s hard enough for ONE person to sing the National Anthem well, but these ladies managed to harmonize all three of their voices perfectly for an epic rendition at the beginning of Super Bowl XXXVII in 2003. Imagine how much practice this took!? It certainly paid off.
Kelly rocked this one — and she did it a cappella! The first American Idol winner performed the Anthem at a Dallas Cowboys game in 2006, and with no music playing behind her, the focus was solely on her incredible voice. And luckily, that was more than enough to make this memorable!
These American Idol contestants sure know how to slay the “Star Spangled Banner,” huh!? Carrie also did it a cappella when she sang at Super Bowl XLIV in 2010, and besides wowing in an all-white outfit, she impressed beyond words with her powerful voice.
8. Lady Gaga
And then, of course, there’s Gaga. It’s easy to overlook her incredible vocals because of her strange and quirky style, but at this year’s Super Bowl, she reminded us why she’s made it in this industry. SOOOO good.
