This is so unbelievably devastating. Italian actor Raphael Schumacher has been declared brain dead after a hanging scene during a Jan. 30 live performance in Pisa, Italy, turned into a tragedy. Raphael is only 27 years old.
Doctors have announced 27-year-old actor Raphael Schumacher is brain dead. The Italian actor was hospitalized after a hanging scene in a theater production took a tragic and shocking turn. Raphael’s family revealed they are now harvesting his organs in hopes of saving others.
After declaring him brain dead, doctors have started the procedure to harvest his organs, a spokesperson at Cisanello Hospital in Pisa told CNN. Raphael had been in a coma since his hospitalization on Jan. 30. He never responded to treatment, and his condition continued to deteriorate.
Raphael was performing in an experimental theater production in the courtyard of Pisa’s Teatro Lux when the tragedy occurred. During the hanging scene, Raphael’s head was covered. A spectator noticed him trembling and ran over to loosen the noose. She and another spectator helped bring him to the ground.
What makes this situation even more devastating is that Raphael changed the script at the last minute to include the hanging scene. He was performing a monologue from Frank Wedekind’s Spring Awakening, BBC reports. “The original monologue included a fake gunshot but he eventually decided for the hanging — without telling us,” the directors of the theater company told Italian newspaper Il Giorno.
Police are currently in the middle of an investigation to figure how this horrible tragedy could have happened. Four people are reportedly under investigation for manslaughter, according to Italian news agency ANSA.
“We are shocked,” Gabriele De Luca, the art director at the theater, told Daily Mail. “No one, not even us, understands how this happened and it will be up to the police to shed light on it.”
Our thoughts and prayers go out to Raphael’s family and friends during this difficult time.
