Our hearts are absolutely broken for Dave Mirra’s family. Following the pro BMXer’s sudden death by apparent suicide, his loved ones have released a statement via Dave’s agent. Read the touching message here.
Dave Mirra’s family is breaking their silence hours after the X-Games medalist’s death. We can’t even imagine what the family is going through, and are deeply saddened after reading this touching first tribute they’ve released publicly for the late 41-year-old.
“Dave’s wife and family are shocked and saddened by the loss of such a remarkable person whom they loved so deeply,” Dave’s agent, Steve Astephen, revealed in a statement to HollywoodLife.com. “Thank you for your kind thoughts and prayers and for respecting their privacy through this difficult time.”
The two-time MTV Challenge host was found dead in his car in Greenville, North Caroline of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound on Feb. 4. What’s especially sad is that just hours before his death, he paid tribute to his wife, Lauren, with a sweet photo of the pair and the caption, “My rock! Thank god.” Dave also leaves behind two young daughters.
While it’s still unclear what led Dave to take his own life, the cause could possibly be attributed to Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE), which is a degenerative disease related to severe head trauma. Dave obviously took a lot of hits throughout his BMX career, and was also an avid boxer, so it’s possible he suffered from this tragic condition which led him to make this sad and shocking decision.
Besides his family, Dave will also be missed by many, including, of course, his fellow BMX riders, like TJ Lavin, who took to Instagram following his friend’s death to urge suicide awareness among his followers. SO sad.
