Super Bowl commercials are notoriously funny, but some can also tug at the heartstrings — and for David Bowie fans, Audi is providing the emotion during Super Bowl 50. The car company’s ad honors the late musician by using his song ‘Starman’ in an epic space-themed ad!
The Super Bowl isn’t exactly where one would imagine they’d see a tribute to David Bowie, but Audi made that happen with its commercial for football’s biggest night. After David tragically lost his life to cancer on Jan. 10, Audi featured the legendary singer’s famous song “Starman” in “The Commander,” a touching ode to both astronauts and David alike. Watch it here!
“Surrounded by memories of the Space Age’s golden years, a retired astronaut has lost his zeal for life,” the video’s caption reads. “But when his son shows up and hands over the keys to the new 205-mph Audi R8 V10 plus, a rocket ride under the stars stirs newfound life within the Commander.”
While Audi didn’t take the typical comedic route for its Super Bowl commercial, it definitely still has the impressive Super Bowl appeal. The ad shows flashes of a very realistic liftoff of a space shuttle as well as flashbacks of the Commander as an astronaut. As soon as the rocket blasts off, David’s “Starman” provides the perfect soundtrack for the scene. On top of all that, the Audi R8 V10 is a pretty sweet car!
As Audi’s description says, the “Commander” Super Bowl ad is “a universal reminder that amazing things happen when we choose exploration, technology and the moon.” And with the way the commercial tied in the late, great Bowie, it’s also a universal reminder that his legacy will live on forever!
