Joseph Fiennes, 45, has made headlines lately as the white actor who will star as Michael Jackson in an upcoming TV special set to air on the UK’s Sky Arts channel. Aside from this latest endeavor however, Joseph’s name might not be a super familiar one. Get to know Joseph better below with our five fast facts!
1. He’s known for playing Shakespeare.
Joseph made his claim to fame as none other than Mr. Romance himself, William Shakespeare, in the 1998 comedy-drama film Shakespeare in Love. His portrayal was so well received that Joseph was nominated for a BAFTA Award and a Screen Actors Guild Award. In the film he starred alongside Gwyneth Paltrow and in 2013 rumors swirled of a possible Shakespeare in Love sequel, but so far, no sequel has been in the works. Maybe 2016 will be the year!
2. He has a touch of royal blood running through his veins.
No, Joseph is not quite a prince, BUT he is an eighth cousin to Prince Charles, the Prince of Wales who’s also the father of Princes William and Harry. Born in Salisbury, Wiltshire, England, Joseph himself came from humble beginnings however. His father was a photographer and his mother a novelist — no wonder he’s a lover of the arts!
3. He’s a twin.
Joseph’s twin, Jacob Fiennes, is the only member of the Fiennes family not working in the arts and living in London. In fact, Jake, as he is often referred, is quite the opposite! He’s a gamekeeper who lives and works in Norfolk and enjoys fishing and hunting. But although Joseph and Jake couldn’t have more diverse lives, Joseph would be the first to tell you how much he appreciates his twin. “I was lucky that I had my twin Jake – I gained strength by having that extra member,” Joseph has said of growing up with Jake. Aw!
4. He got his start in theater.
Joseph made his first professional stage appearance in the West End in The Woman in Black. He next starred alongside Helen Mirren in A Month in the Country — how cool is that?! Joseph continued his theater career by becoming a member of the Royal Shakespeare Company for two seasons before he expanded his resume in 1996 to include film roles.
5. He married a model.
Joseph’s wife, María Dolores Diéguez, is a Swiss model whom he married in August 2009. Joseph and the former Miss Switzerland beauty pageant contestant held their wedding in Tuscany and had a Roman Catholic ceremony. Together they have two daughters, Sam and Isabel.
