It’s here, it’s finally here! Agents Mulder and Scully returned in an epic way for ‘The X-Files’ six-episode limited run, and it’s like no time passed at all! David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson were on their A game for the series premiere, and we couldn’t have been more excited to see this revival!
Oh my god! The X-Files revival’s premiere on January 24 was everything we hoped for and more! Agents Scully and Mulder (Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny) set up another insane paranormal adventure, reminding fans of the good old days. If you were a fan of The X-Files in the original run, then you were not disappointed by this episode! So is the truth still out there?
Can we first talk about how amazing David and Gillian looked in this thing? It’s been 20 years, and they haven’t aged a day! If we didn’t know better (and Scully’s hair was still red), we would have thought we were watching the original series! Let’s get the important point out of the way, because we know you want to know: Scully and Mulder are not together. Sorry, no passionate love scenes!
It’s heavily implied that they were once married, and it’s clear that Scully broke up with Mulder. Though they’re amicable, it’s strained. “We’ve moved on with our lives,” Scully says at one point. “Yes we have, for better or for worse,” Mulder replies. Ouch. The first episode is classic X-Files with an update. Since the FBI folded the X-Files in the final season, Scully went back to being a surgeon, and it’s unclear what Mulder does. But they’re brought together again when a powerful TV personality — and conspiracy theorist, Tad O’Malley (Joel McHale), seeks their help with some brutal alien evidence.
He introduces them to a woman named Sveta. Surprise, they actually helped her when she was a little girl who got abducted! Her life has been hell, filled with abductions ever since. She’s the key to everything, according to Tad. What does this mean? Though Mulder desperately wants to believe, he’s enraged that he was led down so many dark alleys to dead ends at the X-Files. Even a consult with Walter Skinner doesn’t console him. Stomping on his old I Want To Believe poster was a great touch.
Mulder’s belief that the government is hiding evidence of aliens has amplified to new levels, thanks to Tad’s conspiracies. They believe, much to Scully’s horror, that the NSA has been collecting data on the people to soon strategize an alien attack! It seems ridiculous, but as it turns out…an actual UFO just crash landed in Roswell, and a very much alive alien crawled out of the wreckage. What’s the truth?
The government involvement theory is true, of course, if you remember the original run. Soldiers steal researcher’s replicant alien tech, Sveta gets abducted, and Tad goes missing. Scully tests her whole genome after reminiscing about her own abduction, and child, and finds out that she has alien DNA. Omg! Perhaps the biggest reveal of all? The Cigarette Smoking Man is alive! Repeat; the Cigarette Smoking man is ALIVE!
