Where is the debate being held?
The January 17 debate is happening at the Gaillard Center in Charleston, South Carolina. Charleston was deliberately chosen as the next location for the democratic debate because of the shooting massacre at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in June 17.
Lester Holt is moderating this debate
NBC Nightly News anchor Lester Holt is moderating the debate, along with NBC chief foreign affairs correspondent Andrea Mitchell. Meet the Press moderator Chuck Todd will anchor the pre- and post-debate analysis.
This is the last debate before the Iowa Caucus
The highly important Iowa Caucus is happening February 1, so this debate is the last chance for the democrats to make their voices heard onstage before the event that could make or break their campaign. The primary election event is one of the biggest indicators of who will win the party’s candidacy; in 2008, Hillary was far in the lead, until Barack Obama swooped in and won the caucus. Could that happen again?
The debate has no official theme
There’s no set theme on what the democratic candidates will be questioned about during the January 17 debate, but there are definite likelihoods about what topics will come up: gun control, Iran releasing four US prisoners, terrorism, climate change, and that whole Benghazi thing.
