Rowan Blanchard of ‘Girl Meets World’ posted a surprising, honest message to her Twitter followers: she’s neither straight, nor gay, and she’s not going to bother putting a label on it. Incredible!
The 14-year-old star of Disney Channel’s Girl Meets World, Rowan Blanchard, gave her Twitter followers a candid peek into her personal life, with a strong message about sexuality and sexual fluidity. In her tweet, posted January 16, Rowan explained how she would like to be identified — and how she wouldn’t.
“In my life — only ever liked boys,” Rowan tweeted. “However I personally don’t wanna label myself as straight, gay or whateva so I am not gonna give myself labels to stick with — just existing ;).” After a barrage of questions from her fans, she clarified which descriptor she prefers when one follower asked her to explain: “yes open to liking any gender in future is why I identify as queer.”
What an incredibly brave, and empowering move. She may be 14, but she knows exactly who she is and what she stands for. Rowan, who plays Riley Matthews on Disney Channel’s mega-hit Girl Meets World, is an eloquent, driven teen who speaks passionately about social issues. She wrote a passionate essay in August 2015 about the problem of “white feminism” — i.e. feminism that’s not intersectional; it forgets that women of color and white women are faced with different kinds of sexism. She’s a smart, aware cookie!
Rowan’s friend, Amandla Stenberg, announced on Teen Vogue‘s Snapchat that she identified as bisexual. After her gorgeous Teen Vogue cover and spread debuted, she also took to Tumblr for a longer video: “It’s a really, really hard thing to be silenced,” said Amandla in her video, “and it’s deeply bruising to fight against your identity and to mold yourself into shapes that you just shouldn’t be in. “As someone who identifies as a black, bisexual woman, I’ve been through it, and it hurts, and it’s awkward and it’s uncomfortable.”
