John and Lisa, along with their daughter, attorney, and his daughter, sat down with Savannah Guthrie and Carson Daly on Jan. 15 — two days after they found out they won the Powerball! So why in the WORLD did they decide to do an interview for millions of people before cashing in the alleged winning ticket? Actually, it was the lawyer’s idea!
“I think the American public wants to hear from them,” he explained. “And even though they want to be private after this is over, they want to let the public know that they’re the winners.” Don’t worry, the couple confirmed that they would be heading straight to get the ticket scanned once the interview was done, and John will be keeping a TIGHT grip on it until then.
As it turns out, the Munford family almost didn’t buy the ticket that won them millions of dollars — they bought the ticket at the grocery store two hours before the drawing when Lisa urged John to stop on his way home from work, even though he didn’t feel good. And even once they watched the drawing — and checked and re-checked their numbers many times — John said he didn’t believe he was the winner until the next morning, when the news confirmed one winning ticket had been purchased in Munford, Tennessee.
“We’re a little scared,” the family patriarch said. “I didn’t know what to do. I knew I wanted to get an accountant and a lawyer and try to follow the procedures they tell you to follow.” Interestingly, it was the attorney’s daughter, a reporter in Memphis, who contacted the Today show — and she did it by simply calling the NBC switchboard! Luckily, she was finally able to get through to a producer, and they made this first sit-down happen.

The two other winners, from Florida and California, have yet to come forward, and we certainly wouldn’t be surprised if they decide to keep private during this insane time in their lives. And if you’re upset that you didn’t win big this time around, you might want to head out and buy another ticket — there’s another drawing for $40 million on Jan. 16!
HollywoodLifers, are you shocked that the winners didn’t cash in their ticket yet?!
