10 are dead after a suicide bomber detonated his explosive vest in a popular, crowded tourist area of Istanbul on Jan. 12. At least eight of the tragically killed were German citizens, and authorities are certain that this attack was made by ISIS. So sad.
The reign of terror is continuing in Europe. Istanbul is the latest target to be attacked by an Islamic state operative, who showed up to a crowded tourist square in the Turkish city on Jan. 12 with determination to kill as many people as possible. Most of the victims of this brutal attack were German citizens.
The bombing took place at Sultanahmet Square around 10:20 a.m. local time on Jan. 12, and all 10 victims were foreign tourists, mostly Germans. “Today, Istanbul was hit,” German chancellor, Angela Merkel, confirmed in a statement. “Paris has been hit. Tunisia has been hit. Ankara has been hit. Once again, international terrorism is showing its cruel and inhuman face today.” The suicide bomber has been identified as a man from Syria in his late 20s, allegedly named Nabil Fadli.
“We will continue our fight against terrorism with the same resolve and will never take a step back,” Turkey’s Prime Minister added. “We will never compromise, not one single inch.” Besides the 10 killed, 17 people were also wounded in the attack, with 11 of those still hospitalized as of Wednesday morning. ISIS has still not claimed responsibility for the attack, which took place in the middle of a German tour group.
Following this tragedy, Turkey swept across seven provinces and detained 68 terror suspects. “The examination and investigation continues in multiple ways and in a very serious manner,” the Prime Minister confirmed. Targeting Germans seemed to be ISIS’ way of fighting back against Merkel’s policy of taking in Syrian refugees. Our hearts and thoughts are with Istanbul and Germany as the people recover from this shocking tragedy.
